the final 2% is after the point of no return, and your logbook does not carry into new game plus 😔 speaking of logs: enemies and bosses were fun! their behaviors, esp grievers, were complex for the series imo. the lore behind them was nice, but an entire cutscene in the ice belt really should've been cut; the logs were more than enough the fury green was my favorite locale, but it's far too simple considering how often you're expected to return (all the same, not needing to return so often would also help the problem). would really have benefitted from more expansion; power up areas along the cliff face, behind the waterfalls, catacombs under the tree, idk the desert is fine. its existence wholly prevents the other areas from having any sort of complex interconnectivity, and the game flow really suffered bc of it? also could have benefitted from sublocales, like idk, savannah, oases, white sand instead of orange, ruins or collapsed cliffsides making the layout more interesting?? but it's fine honestly really loved the shrines!! definitely shows promise if they're expanded upon, should future entries also be so open world-esque I enjoyed the game, but I'm hesitant to replay it. a lot of weak level design (not the art direction, that's absolutely stellar!) and missed opportunity imo, esp underutilized psychic abilities. still, it's 20 years later, it's different. the team is talented, and there's definitely potential for a prime 5, and I'd love to see it happen and I'll buy it day one, too. no regret whatsoever, I'd say 7/10

that is to say, dialogue pauses waiting for art to load, entire parts of the world don't exist for a tense number of seconds (even if mostly playable), cards don't load their images, and of course the loading times (which are my least concern tbh). makes me wonder if lower-res textures are key.
the area you're currently walking in just... not existing lmao. notably, you can't interact with anything until the ENTIRELY zone is ENTIRELY loaded in, so i'll be waiting for a good 5-10 seconds before i can sit on a bench or talk to a character. there's no way this is a weird culling issue.. right? both dialogue cards and location cards, even character cards, just sometimes never load until the game resets. i've since moved my game data from the SD card to the console's internal memory, and it's helped the issue notably, which leads me to the data streaming being a concern. it's also noticeable in normal dialogue wherein i'm waiting for a character portrait to load in for a character i haven't talked to in awhile (sometimes their 3D model, too!) the often loading screens aren't the worst issue, but it definitely breaks the cozy flow. after too long playing, loading screen blurs aren't blurs anymore, and are just gray. i think it's a sign that a crash is imminent lmao the one thing I still have to try is power-cycling the Switch, so i'll be doing that before my next stream for sure

early thoughts: i'm shocked at both how well/poorly the game holds up on Switch. all the video options are nice QoL features, but the game itself is so lightweight that the graphics settings don't impact the (docked) Switch's performance. its biggest struggle seems to come from the data stream.
it's insane to me how well the TAA works. aliasing? what's that??? absolutely bonkers, makes the game so clean and smooth wow not that i know anything about gamedev, but it makes me shocked that other games have never seem to have done this. i keep turning it off with the hopes that it'll make the game run better, but its so graphically lightweight that it's really there as a matter of taste; trying to have insane graphics is not where this game falls short.

got a little wooden sunflower puzzle as a mystery gift over the holiday 🌻

I think I have a new thing I like ;o;
there's a little wooden gear mechanism (!) that lets you adjust the flower's angle, but it immediately snapped away lmao debris jams the mechanism and leaves it stable at this angle, good enough! it's modular, and has extra pieces to lengthen the stem for a vase too bad I literally threw away my little vases two days ago ;w;

but the dialogue scroll is SO SLOW, and there's SO MUCH repetitive chatter. i could've saved minutes upon minutes with some floating text bubbles, or instant text display, for example.

some aspects are a little kiddie, but 100% if i got this when it came out, this would have been FORMATIVE AF

solatorobo is really charming!
the art direction is impeccable. this is one of the nicest looking DS games I've ever seen. CC2 has done wonders. i always need a moment to figure out what is 3d, 2d, and just drawings (especially in cutscenes).

concerned i'm gonna break my A button by the end lmao
dialogue! the close ups of every character involved, with such nice fidelity, presented so cleanly and stylishly! overlook in the starting area. so many areas have little layers happening; trains, birds, waters, ships. some are 3d, some are 2d, some are mixed, but always a 3d playspace GORGEOUSLY STYLIZED map select. selection has your airship zoom into the area's 2d artwork with a nice dynamic parallax star dogs coffee
