DS9 is my favorite Star Trek series in large part because it takes what had been established by TOS and Next Gen and turns it on its head. Rather than explorers encountering new things, it is grounded in a single location with a really compelling back story that presents new challenges for the crew

Yeah, seriously. It was a bit forward thinking in their introduction of extremism within the Star Trek universe. It's one of my favorite story arcs.
