Great article, and incisive: you’re right. It’s the key trade off. But remember conflicts differ, and a top-down deal which puts peace over justice is more suitable for two well ordered enemies. Fractious, messy violent disorder-type conflict needs a measure of justice for peace to be possible.

It’s an excellent analysis. But as with so much commentary in this area, it focuses exclusively on money flows (income, tax, spending etc) rather than money stocks (wealth, housing assets, shared public goods etc.) it’s the unobserved flow of benefits from assets which really tip the balance.

Given it’ll be a key divide in the next election, that we have plenty of advanced warning, and learning from Brexit, it would be good to have an authoritative compare-and-contrast on what the two options - leave or remain - would entail before the vote
