For me the little bar either points right or left so I usually do it the opposite way the first time then redo it so it is correct.

If you can knit without pain and you feel you are going fast enough I say don't change. I am a self taught knitter, and I knit left handed, so I have to translate too. Progress maybe slower or harder but is that a big deal?

Sometimes yes dpns are the only way to go.
Sometimes you can use long circulars in a magic loop. Sometimes you can use 2 circulars.
