2️⃣Beyond national numbers, we also provide state-level estimates of excess mortality among native-born white males. Using a novel migration-adjusted census comparison method, we highlight the war's uneven impact across regions.

1️⃣ We analyzed full-count individual census records to provide the most precise national estimate of excess mortality during the Civil War. Our estimate of ~698,000 deaths is higher than traditional figures but lower than recent estimates.
