This Special Issue became more topical than we intended. Next year it’s 100 years since y he Finnish sociologist Hilma Granqvist began her fieldwork in Palestine. To commemorate her work Tiina Järvi and I are co-editing a SI on Palestine and Ethnography in MENA for Babylon.

My book review for Yasser Munif’s The Syrian Revolution. Between the Politics of Life and the Geopolitics of Death is out in @civilwarsjournal.bsky.social. It’s a really great book that unpacks the different forms of violence taking place in Syria. Methods too common also in other conflicts.

Students’ walk out today in solidarity with #Palestine. Unfortunately, the university thinks students should not engage in politics. Who are we to educate if not people who can think and act when needed? What would be a better time for societal impact?

Hyvän keskustelun lisäksi sain Joonas Mariston uunituoreen Islamilaisen oikeuden historia -kirjan. Nyt kun islamista ja Lähi-idästä puhutaan taas enemmän, on tutkittu tieto myös suomeksi entistä tärkeämpää.

ICJ heard the 1st oral arguments in case Netherlands & Canada against #Syria for violating Convention Against Torture. The Syrian regime was not, unsurprisingly, present.
