#31daysofgraves Day 31 - Memento Mori. A classic winged hourglass graces this sundial on the headstone of the Ludlum family. Both the sundial and the winged hourglass mark the passage of time. Lakewood Cemetery (the Ludlums are actually buried in Pioneers & Soldiers Memorial Cemetery)

Fall is in the air and turkeys are on the ground at Lakewood Cemetery.

#31daysofgraves Day 30 - Colour. I love French monumental cemeteries with their colorful funerary art, filled with multi-colored succulents and majolica ceramic plants. Cimetière La Farlède, Cimetiere de Solliès-Pont, Cimetiere de Solliès-Toucas

#31daysofgraves “Occupation” Architecture-inspired headstone for Charles Nelson (1945-2007), MN State Historical Architect who worked on historic preservation projects across MN. By Nick Legeros, one inscription reads “laid the foundations and inspired those who continue the work.” Lakewood Cemetery

#31daysofgraves “Column” The grave of Arthur R. King (1851-1881) sporting some very stately ionic columns. Oakland Cemetery, St. Paul.

#31daysofgraves “Figure” The carving of this baby and his dog entwined with each other atop the grave of Earl C Gillespie d. 8/8/1888 is exquisite, especially considering its age. Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis

#31daysofgraves “Graveside OrnamentI” Children’s graves are always tough to see, but I am glad that Alex Gonzalez Cendeja has a dinosaur keeping him company and watching over him. St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Minneapolis

Not a morning person despite being up before dawn most days. But the thin silver lining is the ability to take in the quiet and solitude on an early morning jog/walk.

#31daysofgraves “Unique Animal” I’m always charmed that the local pet cemetery has not just markers for cats and dogs, but also birds, hedgehogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and squirrels. And one cat with her stomach exposed, waiting to attack when you pet her. Memorial Pet Cemetery, Roseville, MN

#31daysofgraves “Cross” 1921 grave marker of Eugene Toenjes. This is similar to a Woodmen of the World insurance marker, but it doesn’t have any of the standard symbols, so is probably an unrelated tree marker.

#31daysofgraves “Bronze” Elks Rest, created by Eli Harvey for the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, keeps watch over the graves of nearly 100 Elks. This is one of many elk statues by Harvey throughout American cemeteries. Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis.

#31daysofgraves “Relocated” Frances Bean was clearly not the first death in Minneapolis, but she was the first to die after settlers started keeping official records. Her grave was moved 20+ years after her death from Layman’s Cemetery to the new Lakewood Cemetery.
