I volunteered for creative writing field trips via 826CHI and they have a similar program in the 826NYC branch which is quite low commitment. The field trips tend to be with younger kids but it was very fun and well organized. They have other programs for teens too.

Did your vet give you that plastic "litter" that helps you collect samples? I've had luck locking the cat in the bathroom overnight with that litter in a baking sheet (important part is shallow + non absorbent) to get the sample.

Unfortunately my local Buy Nothing group is the best way to offload unwanted but still good clothes, books, and furniture.
