Hey, look what I found!

I was going through a binder in the bookcase, and found the one "Give Me One Evening" ads with the female hypnotist. Granted, its not a very good image, and not the best source: its probably from a comic book from the 1960s.

"Love and Passion Under Hypnosis" from Playgirl Magazine, circa 1956-1957

It promises a lot but does not deliver. The enclosed articles on hypnosis and purported pictures of hypnotized women are both pretty generic, and the layout and production is low quality.

There were several versions of this ad, including one where the hypnotist was a woman, hypnotizing a man: it may be the only such one, it was certainly the only one I ever found.

I gave a copy of one of these (mounted and framed) ads to Wiseguy a couple of years ago, just for grins and giggles.

"Successful Hypnotism" by Joan Brandon was another book on hypnosis I can identify from the front cover in one of these ads.

Joan Brandon, herself, is a story in her own right. She was possibly the best known female stage hypnotist of her time, a decade before Pat Collins.

I was surprised at the quality of the text, however. Hypnosis is described as a joint endevour, with a teacher-pupil type of relationship. It sticks with both the progessive relaxation and hand levitation inductions and a count-down deepener, but does a good job explaining everything.

The text is tight: it skips any history lessons and delves right into the hows and whys. There are short chapters on the setting, pre-talk and testing before going into inductions, deepeners, and depth tests, then waking the subject. There's also a chapter on mechanical aids.

"How to Hypnotize" by Bradford Chambers. This was a common ad on the backs of 1950's and 1960's comics and magazines. (There were several such ads, but this is one where I can accurately determine the book being sold.)

It is a slender book, only about 50 pages, 'photographically illustrated'.

If you see this, post a robot.

Another strange entry: Тайна гипноза (The Secrets of Hypnosis) from 1995. 470 pages of densely packed Cyrillic text, all capitalized. I would love to get it translated.

I picked it up from John King Books in Detroit, back when they actually had a 'hypnosis' section (its now sadly empty).

Hypnotica hypnotizes the staff nurse to have her remove their friend to their waiting van, and off they go. Hypnotica, for an unexplained reason, is reluctant to use her hypnotic gaze, and says she is "cursed".

The overall story is about a punk goth band who is going on a road trip. One of their friends was committed to an asylum because of false accusations of self-harm, and the band and friends decide to rescue her and bring her along. Enter, Hypnotica.

BeGoths "The Hypnotic Gaze" (2009) was a comic published as a promotion for the BeGoths line of Goth and Punk Goth dolls. One of the dolls is named Hypnotica (pictured on the left with the red and black clothing and hair buns.)

Next is "The Mesmerist" by Felice Picano. Set in the late 19th Century, the book is a "hypnotic novel of passion and evil" where the Mesmerist holds his hypnotic sway over a large Midwestern city. 4/

If you see thus, quote with a robot that isn't from "Star Wars", "Star Trek", "Doctor Who", or "The Transformers".

Hence, The Robot.

Something uploaded to the Internet Archives: this is an ad for hypnosis books in Urdu. The character in the upper right translate to "hipnatism". The bottom text is contact info about ordering the book.

Another interesting find: a collection of French newspaper comic strips of the Oriental mastermind, Fu Manchu. Created by Sax Rohmer, Fu Manchu possesses hypnotic powers. These three pages show his power in action: alas, its all in French so I can't actually read it.

These are the greeting page and the schedule pages from the program book. The other pages are the typical convention rules and a map of the function space.

I blacked out one presenter's name: if you know it, you know why.

Hypnoticon 2008 program cover. The first (and last) convention for any person interested in the subject of hypnosis, not limited to members of professional organizations.

This was the seed from which the IRL hypno-kink conventions and community sprouted.

This is ONLY the Collection. I have yet to catalog my personal collection in the other room. Then I start on the short fiction, starting with the collections, like "Favorite Stories of Hypnosis".

Only two pages of the advertised ashcan comic were ever made available, along with some flash files. The trademark registration lapsed in 2012, and the website itself still exists but hasn't been updated sine 2002.
