Well it’s been over 20 years so… incremental and a lot has changed in that time. To me the crazy thing to think about is how an interest in tinkering with a fantasy text-based multiplayer game could lead to a successful lifelong career. You just never know what is going to spark something big.

I got my foot in the door with an entry level C programming job. Eventually moved over to C++ development. Still doing that today as a senior level dev.

Back in 2000 I wanted to run my own MUD (multi-user dungeon). I started by compiling for Windows using cygwin (Unix shell similar to mingw+msys). Then I wanted to run on Linux proper so I wiped my Windows install for Redhat Desktop Linux. I was hooked on Linux and programming from there.

I don’t know when you started gaming on Linux but I’ve been doing so since around 2001 and it used to be so much harder! Linux gamers have never had it better. And we owe a whole lot of that to Valve. Not to take away from your frustrations because they are real and things aren’t perfect.

Human stagnation is a driving element of the plot in the Dune universe. It’s one of the main motivations for the God Emperor to trigger “the scattering”.
