The cone lists Ramose’s titles, including two interesting ones, in column 3 (and highlighted in the second image with a blue box). These titles are ir.ty-nswt “eyes of the King of Upper Egypt” and anx.wy-bi.ty “ears of the King of Lower Egypt”. (2/2)

This funerary cone belonged to a royal scribe called Ramose, who lived during the reign of Taharqa (25th Dynasty). The name of the king appears in a cartouche in the fourth column, followed by that of Ramose. Both are identified as mAa-xrw “justified”, indicating that they were deceased. (1/2)

¡UN AÑO MÁS, FELIZ DÍA DE STAR WARS! 😄

Un año más, es 4 de mayo, el día de Star Wars (“May the 4th be with you”), así que si queréis decir “que la fuerza os acompañe” en egipcio a vuestros amigos, aquí tenéis cómo 😉

A few days ago, I found a #manicule on the margin of my copy of Giambattista della Porta’s De Furtivis Literarum Notis (1563), and I asked for bibliography that would allow me to learn more about manicule typologies. Several people recommended Sherman’s Used Books. Thanks a lot! 📚

☞ I have a special thing for manicules. What was my surprise yesterday, as I was exploring my new book, when I found this little manicule! I’m in love!

By the way, are there any typological studies of manicules that could allow me to date it?

Today, in Marina’s cabinet of curiosities and library, two new additions: a first edition (1563) of Giambattista della Porta’s ‘De furtivis literarum notis’, an early modern treatise on cryptography complete with three working volvelles and many diagrams; and a wax cylinder for a phonograph.

I had the most wonderful time this evening presenting about Egyptian astronomy at Norton Priory! Certainly one of the most beautiful venues I’ve ever lectured at. Thanks to everyone who attended (the room was full!) for their enthusiasm and wonderful questions!

💫 Thoroughly enjoying the longer sunny afternoons at the scriptorium, and getting to use some of my astral instruments to map the data I’m working on, like my replica of the 15th c. astrological volvelle at @hsmoxford.bsky.social, made by the incredibly talented Ukrainian engineer Master Terebrus.

🌙 Rather apt view from the scriptorium window, as I labour over astronomical topics. The lunar crescent and Venus towards the western horizon.

On Tuesday at the NYPL I could see their Gutenberg Bible. I own a facsimile of the Göttingen copy. While the printed text is the same in both, illumination and rubrics where still handwritten, and notable differences can be seen in the same pages of the New York copy and mine.

📖💫 I was thrilled last Tuesday to see a copy of Peter Apian’s Astronomicum Caesareum at the New York Public Library, only to find at my return to the UK that my very own copy of a facsimile of the book had arrived!

Because every proper bibliophile should own a Gutenberg Bible in some form. 🤓📖

🌞 🌚 Such a beautiful scene! Joseph dreaming with the sun and the moon in the Vienna Genesis, a 6th century manuscript written in Greek that contains the earliest surviving illustrated biblical cycle in codex form.

🪐 Back in the UK after spending a wonderful week at Athribis working on the corpus of astral ostraca, which is now the largest in Egypt. Very productive days with some exciting discoveries, including the oldest date in a horoscope, which takes us back to the reign of Ptolemy XII!
