The market has performed better than reasonably well over that period. If you compared this to stock gains of other sectors, you'd see similar gains.

If the gist is insurers are getting public subsidies, what sectors don't get boosts such as tax breaks, government contracts, research subsidies?

I bought Tom's in the 90s once (before Colgate took over). There was a fly in the tube, not kidding. It sounds like an urban myth. I didn't write the company, didn't ask for a refund, but never bought it again while counseling friends and family to avoid.
