Visiting the East Wing of the White House in 2023, courtesy of my Senator, Lisa Murkowski. It felt like such a gift to walk in the beautiful and historic peoples’ house. That day, Dr. Jill Biden was hosting a bunch of military kids on the front lawn for a wellness celebration. It was lovely.

Is this @saraackermanbooks best book yet?! Blending historical fiction with page-turning narrative across a century, with three women’s POVs, Ackerman sheds light on a Hawaiian mystery that needed to be told. As a writer, I loved insights into how a book is created. Thank you Sara!

Fish pond views, one of only a handful remaining on Oahu. Most likely built between 1200-1600, this fish pond is an example of some of the most advanced aqua farming of the time across the Pacific 🤙

Excited to contribute an essay about encountering migrating koleas on Oahu to the inaugural issue of Froot Water, a new creative journal 💙

NOT FOR SALE. How could we consider selling the Tongass, the lungs of North America? I just finished contacting my congresspeople, which might seem like a little action, but I do believe it makes a difference. I’ve heard back from all of their offices when I’ve reached out over the last few months.💚

Nothing says summer in Hawaii like outrigger canoe racing season. When the culture is so deeply intertwined with the ocean, entire communities gather to celebrate the sport and this weekend, the youngest paddlers paddling their hearts out for their canoe clubs 💙

Christmas berry tree. Beautiful but invasive, its canopy dominates and outcompetes local flora for resources.

Lantana! The small but mighty blooms flourish in 50 countries, including here in Hawaii (US); birds disperse its seeds far and wide during migration. The plant is used as a bioindicator of soil health 💚

History hike: Kamana Nui Valley featuring seven original cobblestone stream crossings on an old carriage road. The ahupua’a was a 1700s battleground for Oahu ali’i, rich with resources, home to Kamehameha V’s summer cottage and before that, a bird catchers’ path and center for hula and chanting.

Just learned about the awesome work @topherpayne.bsky.social is doing to create alternative, healthier endings to some children’s books. Thanks for this totally satisfying Giving Tree update 💚

One of my favorite places, in game mode! We play a ton of games, my son designs board games and we played this with a group ages 11 to 75–it was a total winner 💚

A humble coconut crab on Palmyra in the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument; the area just cleared for commercial fishing, a devastating change for ocean health. Hawaiʻi U.S. Sen. Schatz: We should be protecting the Pacificʻs unmatched ecology and biodiversity for future generations.

A cold front rolling through today for the rare treat of a thunderstormy rainy day. But even thunderstorms here have aloha: gentle rumbles and distant bellows.

Seen on a walk: a lovely Heliconia rostrata. It’s not invasive, but also it’s not native to Hawaii. The #BBC ran a story about the wild mix of flora here on Oahu. Locals are committed to preserving healthy endemic species and their environments—but there are challenges with this mixed up ecosystem.
