I do think that if this was an anime, it could all be solved via golf tournament, though.

And that’s on top of a whole bunch of conservative nonsense that I won’t get into.

So, no, the Trump-loving Latin-Americans haven’t learned a thing. There’s way too many centuries of baggage for a single narcissist to undo.

For most people, this means that if you don’t support the performance of white hegemony, you’re automatically an Other. If you don’t renounce ” dirty immigrants” you ARE a dirty immigrant. If you don’t decry the ”rapist, drug-dealing, terrorist brown people,” then you’re one of them.

then you can be sort of white.
This isn’t that you become ”one of the good ones”. Instead, people just eventually treat you like you’re white? It’s a cultural performance that’ only exists if you perform hegemony right, with your skin colour buying you additional chances or leeway.

But that translates into a very prevalent culture of respectability where you can eventually buy yourself into whiteness/respectability if you’re willing to sacrifice your indigenous/other self. So, if you follow white culture rules, if you sell those who are ”less white” than you—

To put it in a clear context: calling someone an ”Indio” can still be used as an insult. There are sayings like ”blanquito se ve más bonito” (white looks prettier) that are still in use. Fuck, I get a weird level of respect whenever I visit Mexico simply because I’m light-skinned, and it’s gross.

Post-independence Mexico didn’t go to Indigenous peoples or a coalition. It went to the local elites, which at that point were the people who had the most European blood. And, because of centuries of miscegenation, that was largely dictated by who looked the whitest.

Racial mixing is inherent to the history of Mexico because it was part of the social contract. The project of the Spanish conquest was one of racial, cultural, and political miscegenation which was cemented with our independence because of Mexico’s need for unity after centuries of colonial rule.

While the chaste system was based on a person’s level of Europeanness, with Europeans born in Europe being at the top, and black slaves being at the bottom. The lived reality was a lot blurrier. In short, you could sort of marry/procreate into a level of whiteness.
