I believe that their ego gets in the way of admitting they were used. They've been loud about it, to the public. Now it's hard to admit that they were taken advantage of.

I feel in today's situation, those who were duped into voting for the orange nightmare, could have quietly switched sides, a long time ago.

This would cut out the power struggle and the purposeful refusal to work with those across the aisle.

In Japan, they have a parliamentary democracy. One interesting aspect, that caught my attention. When their "house" passes a bill, it goes to their "Senate." If the senate doesn't pass the bill, it goes back to the house for another vote. It it gets 2/3 vote, then it becomes law.
