Yes and that resulted in regional identities being erased or co-opted. Moreso I was thinking of the Catholic church ( no equivalent in the Islamic world) and how entities like Britain and France centralized earlier than say something like Safavids.

Wouldn't you say that the Multiculturalism/multi-confessional aspect of the middle east is moreso a result of the inability of a centralized polity taking root till very recently in the shape of nation-states? By contrast, Europe had a Central institutions earlier.
