Carlos keeps thinking about Jannik under the setting sun. He's lying in bed, playing with a stress ball he keep tossing and catching as he licks his teeth, thinking and thinking and thinsniking about the Italian man. Carlos wants more time and the possibility to look into Jannik's eyes. They look so clear, scarily so, like Carlos could see his own soul reflected in them. He tosses and catches. How would his hands feel on his arms, his lips in the crook of Jannik's neck? Up, and down. What kind of sound would Jannik make if they kissed? Lost in thought, exhausted from the day, he can't sleep unlike Pedro who's out of it, cuddling his duvet. As cautious as he can be, he climbs down his bed and puts on a hoodie, naked feet on cold ground. He walks to the only place where he knows he'll feel respite. The pool is silent, aside from its soft lapping, its constant movement, a quiet life. Carlos sits on the edge of the pool, legs immersed to the calves. There, he closes his eyes and lets himself think about Jannik. It's a hopeless crush. Not that Carlos doesn't believe he would be unable to get Jannik to be into him; from the looks of it, Jannik could easily be on board with some messy making out, too much spit, an ungodly amount of lube and the desire to be each other's for a short while. The ting is—the thing is that Carlos knows how destructive these passions are. It's safe to let himself fantasize about Jannik's slender fingers on his burning body, it's another to put it into action, to take the risk to fuck it up and having to show up at every competition and hold each other's gazes. So Carlos will let himself flirt, something harmless, but he can't allow himself to fuck up the only thing that makes him come alive like swimming does. He spends a long time staring at the calm expanse of water, long enough that he keeps yawning, slowly falling asleep sitting.

Carlos yawns, holding onto the edge. The previous night's date, on top of being tragic, had also left him tired. Fuck Pedro and his wrong ideas. He doesn't need to date, nor does he need to fuck. There's some ruckus coming from the changing rooms, and then Carlos spots them: Italian flags printed into their jacket, smooth heads with them all wearing their swimming caps, lean muscular legs. There's a guy taller than most of them, sharp cheekbones, barely there eyebrows, Carlos squints a little. The guy's striking. He walks a little awkwardly, like he wasn't made to roam Earth, maybe only swim. They take off their jackets and Carlos is still staring. Alabaster skin, Carlos can't help but look. He was half expecting moles, something to interrupt the expanse of smooth skin, visible ribs, hip bones. Carlos wants to feed the boy something substantial, wants to cut his lip against his cheekbone. Ah. Carlos looks away. Pedro is staring at him quizzically. The other team's coach starts talking and Carlos leaves the border to swim another lap, enough strength in his kick to blur the vision of a pale stranger. He swims a lap, another, and then sees the Italians line up on their side of the pool. Tall guy is getting ready to plunge and Carlos can only stare, mouth parting when the guy plunges from the edge, all awkwardness gone. His body is shaped into a perfect curve, long fingers curling over each other, body arch beautiful, toes pointing, all of his body slicing into the water with barely a splash. The guy stays underwater a little longer than what Carlos is used to, and, well, when he comes back to the surface, he's fast. Carlos has to erase the smile from his face. He doesn't need to fuck, but he does need to compete against that man.
