An urgent update on the ongoing Shutdown Hunger Crisis:
Late last night, the USDA issued a memo stating that any state that had been in the process of issuing full SNAP benefits must “immediately undo any steps taken to issue full SNAP benefits for November 2025.”
Urgent Update: Late Saturday night, USDA issued a memo that all states must “immediately undo any steps taken to issue full SNAP benefits for November 2025.” Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, responded: “This is more chaos and more cruelty. Some of the 42,000,000 Americans who are legally entitled to SNAP grocery help got it. Most didn't.” Urgent Update: Late Saturday night, USDA issued a memo that all states must “immediately undo any steps taken to issue full SNAP benefits for November 2025.” Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, responded: “How can it be that a person on one part of a computer file in one state happens to get these benefits, this vital food to survive, and others don't?”

“If Trump’s USDA follows the court order, this will be a massive victory for the 42 million Americans – most of whom are low-paid workers, children, seniors, people with disabilities, and/or veterans – who need SNAP to help put food on the table. If USDA acts quickly to make even partial November payments, this will forestall what would have been the greatest hunger crisis in America since the Great Depression..." "...This is yet another reminder of why Constitutional checks and balances are vital to American freedom, and that an independent judiciary is a pillar of any functioning democracy. But even if USDA complies with this order, SNAP benefits will be somewhat delayed, and, in any case, this decision only kicks the can down the road for a few weeks..." "...We still urgently need President Trump and Congressional Republicans to reach a bipartisan agreement with Democrats to reopen the government and prevent a massive spike in healthcare premiums to tens of millions of Americans.”

What’s more: The majority of Americans nationwide who identify as Republicans want SNAP funds increased or maintained, not cut.

Yet Republicans in Congress have overwhelmingly supported aggressively cutting the program – the opposite of what the majority of Republican Americans want.
