That has been my pov for quite a few years now. An LLM can’t know what it’s saying because it doesn’t have a concept of what the data it’s parsing corresponds to. It can do what it does purely because of statistics, not because it can have any idea of what those statistics represent.

I’d be more willing to give them the benefit of the doubt if there was any sort of consistent cause and effect that could lead to “if I do this, it’ll do this every time”. Otherwise it’s just basically playing with rng in my mind
