One of those talks was about them moving to a new place, together. Daniel brought it up. He said he wanted a place that was theirs from the start and without a pause. It was lovely. “We do still have Night Island,” Armand reminded him. “You do, in fact.” “Yeah, that still falls in the ‘pause’ category, babe.” (Babe. Daniel calls him ‘babe’ again. It feels… it feels more like coming home than anything Armand has ever felt, with the exception of holding Daniel in his arms again, when he thought he never would; kissing him again; making love to him again; having his voice narrate a commentary to his life again.) “And besides,” Daniel went on that night, curling his hands around a cup of warm blood, shifting a little in a way that betrayed his nerves. “I’m a Boomer New Yorker—” “You’re from California.” “—and it’s basically Florida, so I figured we’d move there when I, uh, retire.” Armand tipped his head. “Retire?” “Yeah, I was trying to make it a euphemism for staging my death, but I guess it didn’t land. In my defence, I’m only halfway through my first mug.” He tapped the ceramic (custom-designed to say Do feed the gremlin after midnight) with a claw. “So yeah, I figured we could move back in once I bow out. And for now, we could, you know. Get a new place of our own.”

For this Thursday's #WIPWednesday we're back to the reverse chase fic! Chapter 5 of 5+1, and the girls (the old men) are TALKING!

“Take your fucking pick!” he shouts. “Last month, last year, Dubai, nineteen-fucking-eighty-five, we got an entire smorgasbord of abandonment going on here!” “Every single time the answer is the same!” Armand explodes, shouting back, his voice broken and hoarse and only tangentially human; it thrills Daniel more than it should. “Then what fucking is it!” “I told you! I want you to be well! It’s always been this! Every time I left! Every!! Time!!!” The word cracks across the empty room; Armand’s eyes are like a dying star, wild and wide, his hair unkempt, lips parted and teeth showing as he pants the air he doesn’t need. Suddenly he towers over Daniel, taller than he ever remembers him being, drowning Daniel in his shadow. His feet aren’t touching the ground. Daniel lets go of his shirt; his hands are steady as he slowly lowers them; he doesn’t take a step back; he holds Armand’s gaze even though it feels like drifting off into the sun, a rope that snapped during a space walk. Slowly, quietly, Armand floats back down. His shoes, scuffed and neglected, touch the unsettlingly clean floor. “Okay,” Daniel says, feeling like he’s just run a marathon and, in a fitting homage, is about to drop dead. “Okay. Time out.”

“We have recently found out that Daniel carries the cloud gift gene, and I am fully confident he will be able to express it. And soon, I’d wager.” “Yeah, he throws me off a roof once a month to check if it’s kicked in yet.” Armand smiles, white teeth and lazily pleased eyes; Christ, what an asshole. “You are the most prodigious fledgling ever created, Daniel. You are remarkable.” He turns to their captive audience of one, eyebrows arching, chin jutting. “Yes,” the other vamp babbles hurriedly. “Yes, most impressive. Most impressive. Unheard of, I’m sure.” See, the thing is, Armand will still kill the vamps if they fail to be sufficiently impressed with Daniel’s vampiric prowess; but he will also kill them if they’re too impressed and look like they’d like a bite out of him (metaphorically speaking). It’s like a really weird version of the Sphinx, if it was built out of possessiveness, horniness and emotionally incestuous parental pride.

This thing inside Daniel — the one that’s sobbing and crying and pulsating with pain like a severed limb — finally breaks free. “Why don’t you want me?” he asks, scraped raw and so fucking anguished, so abandoned, so childish. Child-like. “I do want you,” Armand says, with that hushed intensity of his that sucks all the oxygen out of the room. But Daniel’s fire — a delightful cocktail of rage and heartache and desperation — burns strong. “Let me guess: more than anything in the world?” he lashes out. (He’s always been a biter; always gone for the jugular; Christ, what an amazing vamp he was always destined to make.) He expects some form of ‘yes’ or some clever lie, but Armand cuts them both off at the knees when he says: “No.”

Right there, a tall figure, the only one that’s standing still in this jumping, swaying crowd, the only one who doesn’t get jostled or bumped. Dark clothes, dark hair, those beady orange eyes. Everything inside Daniel sings in recognition, and he starts forward, which is when Armand turns away, slipping in the direction of the exit, and fuck that! Daniel lunges between the crush of bodies, reaches out, hooks his fingers in the back of Armand’s belt. Armand turns around, hair flying, wide-eyed, startled; Daniel isn’t buying any of it for a second. “You said you did want me,” Daniel says over the roar and pulse of the stage; his fingers are still anchored behind that belt, but slipping, as Armand turns towards him. “Yes. Very much.” He says it so sadly and so coolly at the same time. He’s doing that uber-composed thing, where he’s lacquered over with varnish and polish and glass. Vibrant and vivid and fucking fascinating but… untouchable. Unreachable. Unknown. Or: 5 times Daniel couldn't catch Armand, post-turning, +1 (so many) time(s) he did. Updates on weekends.

Thursday has always been my #WIPWednesday, so have another snippet, lads! This one is chapter 2 of 'He prefers to hunt for it', aka the 5+1 reverse chase fic! Chapter 2 coming to an AO3 near you this weekend!
So yeah. Daniel remembers. Him. Armand. Them. He remembers them. He remembers all the batshit stuff, sure: your run-of-the-mill psychosexual escapades, the random destruction of public property, the drugs, the blood, the rodents in the blender. Fine. He can deal with that. Sure. But there’s other stuff too. Shit he’s not sure he can deal with. Shit like happiness. Fun. Loving— loving. They were in love. He remembers looking at Armand’s smile, big and open and happy, and feeling like he never needs to eat or snort coke again; he remembers holding him and being held, remembers it so starkly his now permanently 69-year-old body aches in the places that make up the missing shape of Armand pressed up against him. He remembers watching him dismantle a microwave and feeling so full of love he had to wiggle in place and laugh. He remembers laughing, sweaty in a heatwave, when Armand wrapped himself around him to cool him down. He remembers— yeah, he remembers holding his fucking hand in fucking Paris.

C’mere.” Armand happily allows himself to be towed closer, standing between Daniel’s legs as he parts them for him; his luminous violet eyes are looking up with wonder and slyness, and Armand, who has been looked at so much by so many, often thinks he’s never felt quite like this. Like he does when Daniel looks at him. Daniel’s hands go to his hips, thumbs pressing into the twin juts of bone, and he growls, dives in to mouth at Armand’s belly, lick a stripe up the flat plain of it. “Jesus, boss, you’re so hot it makes my brain hurt.”

“Can we agree you owe me some answers?” Those eyes flash blood-orange, sharp and bright. “I have given you your gift,” he hisses. “The one you spent twelve years pestering me for. I think I have paid you off in full.” Oh-kay, looks like they’ve just stepped in some Louis there. Because that’s what Armand did with him, wasn’t it — commit a betrayal so complete it could never be forgiven, therefore Armand would have to spend the rest of eternity paying Louis off, ergo Louis would have to keep him forever. Boyfriend locked down. Psychotic yet frighteningly clear and logical in a way you can’t un-see. Louis de Babytrap du Lac met his match: a guy so absolutely sure no one could ever love him that he constantly traps everyone into being with him. But now it looks like Armand doesn’t want to repeat this pattern with Daniel; interesting. Ignoring an inconvenient surge of irritation and pain, Daniel files this little fact away. Changing course, skirting that landmine. “Oh, good, so we’re not pretending the twelve years never happened.” Armand scoffs. “Of course not, I wouldn’t insult you like that.” “Gee, thanks. So the whole Bambi-eyed farce in Dubai was, what? A compliment to my intellect?”

He turns away from the stage, scans the crowd. Where is he… Where is that fucking asshole… His chest hurts again, this time with rage. Christ, he hates him, he wants to grab him, scream at him, make him answer. He wants the answers he’s fucking owed, he wants to catch him, just so he can be the one to send the asshole away. (That’s a lie. That’s a lie and, unfortunately, Daniel is really good at spotting lies. Even the ones he tells himself.) The music pulses around him, and Daniel’s heart pulses with it, quicker and quicker— There! Summary of the fic "One dark and scary night" by hummingbeeoOo: And there’s the spattered trail, globs and stains dripped all over the fancy lava rock tiles Armand wanted in their kitchen. Clearly, the trail has several layers, laid one over the other as dripping containers were carried back and forth. Elongated splashes suggest a brisk pace. The perpetrator was in a hurry. Daniel isn’t a true crime writer, but he lives with Armand, so it’s almost the same thing. “Baaa-by…” Daniel croons, and yeah, okay, he’s kinda hitting the tone for luring a semi-feral pet that’s due for a vet check-up. Then again: it’s Armand. Or: the perils of coming home when you have an Armand.

Armand huffs. “Fine. If you insist.” “Oh?” Daniel grins, wraps his arms around him. “Is that what this is? Want me to whine a bit, demand your attention?” Armand purses his lips, eyelashes fanning out as his eyes dip away; busted. Jesus, Daniel adores this little asshole. “Yes, perhaps a little.” “You got it. Hey, time for a quickie before science calls?” Armand makes a show of glancing at the bedside clock; he should be out the door in all of thirteen minutes. “Let’s see, shall we,” he says, and rolls Daniel onto his back. Daniel grins, even as his breath hitches on habit, legs falling open; he’s so fucking easy for Armand, it’s not even funny any more.

I had this idea of the Talamasca sending Daniel the files again, or maybe he uploaded them to the cloud and just downloads them again to a new laptop finally, he sits down and takes a look at them; as he suspected, there is a folder on him and Armand, filled with sub-folders and files the first file is a video the description is brief and clinical: Video recording. Date: 26th June, 1978. Subjects: A.; Molloy, D. Author of recording: Molloy, D. Camera model: JVC GC-3300E (colour). Note: audio not available. so he clicks on it the image flickers, pretty well restored, but still a little grainy, and it takes a while for the camera to focus it shows Armand, in bed, shirtless among rumpled sheets, shot from the chest up, his drowsy, lazy smile filling the screen he looks so easy and happy he says something, but there's no audio, so the words are a sweet, lazy mystery he reaches out and the camera wobbles all over the place for a while, showing blurry flashes of a room, before it stabilises and starts gliding away, turning around, suspended by Armand's power, to show Daniel in the frame as well, grabbing uselessly at the camera before Armand gently coaxes him back down on the bed and they kiss, laughing and happy the camera lingers, then the image flickers out and the video ends --- I THINK this should be the first thing Daniel sees of himself and Armand BECAUSE consider. in love stories so full of gore and violence and psychosis (and there's plenty of that for Daniel and Armand in the '70s too), the REAL shock value would be in seeing something gentle and innocent Daniel would be ready for madness. he would NOT be ready for THAT thank you for coming to my lecture

For now, Armand leans back, crosses his legs ankle-over-knee, drapes one arm along the back of the sofa; it’s not his preferred sitting pose, nor his most natural body language, but he slips into it with relative ease, all to best paint the picture of Daniel as his ‘sugar baby’, as they say. There’s, frankly, little need for pretence, he muses with a half-hidden smile — Daniel is so precious to him, and he loves doting on him so completely. His might just be the most spoiled fledgling in vampiric history. And Armand would take it as a personal failing if it were otherwise. He passes most of the time scrolling idly on the iPad perched in his lap, looking up only sparingly and with feigned disinterest. Oh, it’s hard to pretend so, because all he wants to do is soak up the vision of Daniel squirming and defensively quipping at the tailor and her assistants, of all the garments held up and offered to him, of all the eyes focused solely on the task of appreciating Daniel’s body and making sure its beauty is highlighted and accentuated. At one time, he overhears one assistant’s breathless thoughts about Daniel’s forearms, and he lifts his eyes, pinning the young man with a quietly warning gaze; the assistant flusters, drops a pin, busies himself picking it up. A hot sense of possessive satisfaction curls in Armand’s chest like an ember. Yes, he’s enjoying himself despite not being able to look at Daniel as often as he’d like — which is for the entirety of the proceedings, not even a fraction of a second spared to blink.
