...excellent characters, an over-arching story like no other, and a protagonist that happens to be my favorite female protagonist of all time, then Trails in the Sky might just be for you.

If you've been keen to try out this series and appreciate slow-burn stories with an expansive world with some of the best political intrigue in gaming, coupled with...

An excellent remake of an excellent game, Trials in the Sky 1st Chapter takes us back to the beginning of the Trails subseries and boy has it never looked and played this beautifully before.

While the game maintains a fairly low-stakes narrative for a significant portion of its runtime, it manages to switch up gears in a slow but apt manner, resulting in a constantly enjoyable experience.

While the pacing might be too slow for some, I believe that the game is both deliberate and smart with its slow pacing, allowing itself to build up its world and characters in a compelling and effective manner.

The game hits 4K@60 FPS (PS5) pretty much 100% of the time, and runs very well on the ROG Ally (Bazzite, 1080P, Medium Settings, ~40 FPS, 18W TDP) and a 9800X3D + 9070XT PC (Windows, Max Settings, 3440×1440@150-170 FPS)

Performance has also been improved compared to Daybreak 2 (PS5) with less stutters and frame drops (Daybreak 2 had only a few of those, but Sky FC manages to trim them down even more).

The cutscenes and their overall direction have more flair and are animated beautifully and elevate the experience as a whole. In general, the presentation in this game is both a step up from previous titles and excellent on its own terms.

Falcom's engine has come a long way, and it looks stunning. The models look sharp and beautiful, the environments sport noticeably higher fidelity compared to, say, Daybreak 2, and the animation is a massive step up, too.

It scaled up just right, without feeling neither too stifling nor unnecessarily expansive. It's almost exactly how I remember it being but in 3D.

...elevates the Trails series to a league of its own when it comes to crafting believable worlds and lovable characters.

The game was scaled up from 2.5D to 3D very gracefully; yes, compared to the original, the game is larger in terms of the areas but it doesn't FEEL unnaturally large.

The addition of Active Voices made so much difference with fleshing out the characters and making them feel closer to each other. The story holds up impressively well; the political intrigue mixed with the character-driven interactions is something that...

and unfortunately the ending theme, which is not as good as I had hoped, even without comparing it to the (legendary) original song.
October 5, 2025 at 6:43 PM
The soundtrack is a 9.8/10 effort; every single song was redone in a way that was faithful yet fresh and I was blown away by how good it turned out. The only exceptions are Royal Castle (which is still a great arrangement, but the violin solo held it back from perfection)...

This was done without causing any narrative inconsistencies (ex. shards from the Daybreak day were not fully adapted here, as they haven't been invented yet). The changes are thoughtful without causing any narrative dissonances.

Combat is excellent and has been revamped exceedingly well. The quartz system here is still my favorite in the whole series due to its balance of simplicity and depth. The incorporation of gameplay elements from future titles was a welcome upgrade.

But the potential for improvement in either a sequel or a new Atelier game with a different protagonist in a similarily structured game is high and I can't wait to see what they have planned in the future.

To wrap things up, it's a pretty good game, Yumia is a great protagonist and her journey really resonated with me. A few teething issues on the gameplay and game design front hold it back, the cast could've benefitted from more downtime together, and the ending felt slightly abrupt.

Grinding and collecting particles, which are IMO not easy to collect effectively in an organic manner, essentially bottlenecked what and to what level I can craft an item. It really is a shame given how fun the synthesis system is.

Item rebuilding also makes revisiting older builds very convenient and it encourages players to not wait too long to craft something, since it can be improved later down the line. It also reduces the tedium of having to build an item from scratch.
However, the particle system negatively impacted it.

The synthesis system is awesome. I enjoyed going through the recipes and building new stuff. The gameplay loop presented here is as addictive as ever.
