Hi Bluesky, we're The Humane Research Trust. 👋

In our 60 years as a charity we've funded over 280 scientific projects across the UK, advancing knowledge of human diseases WITHOUT animal experimentation.

We're striving towards a future for science that doesn't involve animal suffering. Join us! 🧬
Rights aren’t optional - they’re fundamental. Yet the current UK law (ASPA) governing the use of animals in laboratories isn't being enforced.

On #InternationalAnimalRightsDay, we’re calling for stronger enforcement of the law to protect animals.

Defined, animal-free media improve transparency and reliability and better reflect human biology.

To transition, scientists need new protocols, validation, and institutional support.

That's why we offer dedicated funding to enable them to make this shift.

On this day in 1961, the drug thalidomide was withdrawn in the UK.

Even now, we're still using faulty animal studies to predict the safety of drugs in humans. It's time for change.

Every year, millions of animals - rabbits, dogs, primates - spend their lives in labs.

This #GivingTuesday, you can change that. Your donation will fund cutting-edge, animal-free research - science that saves lives without causing suffering.

Of 500 researchers surveyed in Engineering in Life Sciences:

🐇 53% said they mainly work with live animal models
🧪 Less than 10% said they don't use any animal products in their in vitro research
🧬 68% said their knowledge of animal-free products is inadequate

Welfare standards in animal research represent the minimum.

They aim to reduce suffering within animal use, not challenge whether animal use is necessary at all.

Our view is that welfare is the foundation. But replacement is the future.

🚫🐁 Animal testing isn’t the future, NAMs are.

This new article makes the case for journals, funders and scientists to embrace humane, human-relevant research.

THRT helped spark this conversation at our Manchester symposium.

Alternatives to animal testing are the future — it’s time that journals, funders and scientists embrace them
Biomedical research techniques that don’t involve the use of animals are gaining momentum, but those using innovative approaches still face resistance from some quarters.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest - aggressive, complex, and hard to treat.

That’s why we're funding UCL scientists to develop a fully synthetic, animal-free model that mimics the tumour microenvironment using human cells.

Once a household term in debates over animal rights, vivisection literally means 'cutting while alive.'

Over time, the word faded from public vocabulary. ❌

But the reality behind the language hasn’t changed. Millions of animals are still used in British labs every single year.

🗞️ In case you missed it:

The latest UK gov statistics reveal that a total of 2.64 million procedures involving live animals were carried out in Great Britain in 2024.

To replace animal experiments, scientists need donated human tissue.

That's why we're urging those who oppose animal testing to find their local biobank and register to donate organs and tissue after death.
