Researching this exact sort of things is low-key one of the reasons why I recently decided to minor in sociology.

As someone who genuinely sucks at RP and finds it boring at best and profoundly unpleasant at worst, but will occasionally go absolutely feral when discussing hyper-elaborate kink scenarios with folks who are on a similar wavelength in terms of weirdness... I felt that on a deeply personal level

It's not something I do myself, but I've never been bothered by other artists doing it, either.
There are a bunch of creators I really enjoy for whom featuring a sona or obvious self-insert in their work is a crucial part of their brand.
It definitely makes some of their pieces feel more personal.
