bluesky is a shell game run by silicon valley grifters, and their narrative about "decentralization" is a joke—but after a few years in the activitypub space, the vibe there too is indescribably exhausting. increasingly I think the problem is the idea that a "good" social media exists anywhere.

technical, but to the point.

"AT Proto has become essentially a sort of ideological vaporware; a way for Jay Graber et al to run a social media platform while claiming they don't run a social media platform."

CEO of bluesky mocking trans users of her site with a bad-faith "cute" joke about "waffles" (i.e. how their concerns are just noise). every time I think I might give this site another shot, the people who own it out themselves again (and again) as weird, toxic jerks.

anyway infrastructure is always part dream, isn't it. one reason why it's interesting.

at first I found this tension frustrating, it felt like a con: users were being drawn onto a platform that at a basic, technological level was not what it presented itself as, or what it led users to believe.

I've come around to it though. it gives the platform a vibrant, unfinalized quality.

maybe the tension is between bluesky as made and another bluesky that users who arrived dreamed up, then basically demanded into existence: a bluesky with blocks, private messages, banning.

dream bluesky has gained substance over time but it's still fragile, at odds with an underlying blueprint.

at the moment, the jesse singal issue crystallizes this tension. last time I had an account here, in the summer of last year, it was something else.

I'm sure I'll figure out what to do with this, at some point.
