#Refugees #AsylumSeekers

In 2024, 82 refugees died trying to cross the English Channel in overcrowded small boats.

The highest number came from #Afghanistan, followed by #Iran.

There are no safe routes for asylum applications
from either of those countries,
nor from most of the others:

#USAID For the record Elon Musk, USAID have been active in #Iraq since 2003, providing humanitarian assistance, economic development - and conflict management, as here in 2008 supporting Shiite Baghdadis and their Sunni neighbours after they had been occupied by ISIS.

And in the courtyard of the Umayyad mosque in Damascus, despite the alleged grim (pilgrim-trap) presence of the severed heads of John the Baptist and of Imam Hussein, children play.

Listeners to Edward Stourton discussing religious pluralism in Syria on World This Weekend on @bbcradio4.bsky.social may be interested in these 🎄 photographs I took in the Christian quarter of Damascus in 2006. Almost as gaudy as Ohio.

An early example of the Selfie Pandemic.
Sending a photograph of yourself
as a Christmas Card

is

weird.

Alternative suggestion: a nice shot of the Downing Street tree. With carol singers, or on its own.

Strange infection of some media
with pompous 'officialese' language;
Prison
has become 'HMP',
in 'HMP Pentonville"
on @bbcnews.bsky.social earlier.

Must Oscar Wilde's famous poem

be renamed

The Ballad of HMP Reading?

#Israel's multiple destruction of planes, ships, weapons & ammunition in #Syria shows that @nnetanyahu.bsky.social tolerated the tyrant of Damascus & his arsenal, & was therefore knowingly complicit in #Assad's war crimes.
Which adds to the war crimes charges against the Israeli prime minister.

If Bashar al Assad's brother Maher is still active,
the backlash in Hama, Homs & Aleppo may be merciless.
In 1982 his father Hafiz suppressed a violent Muslim Brotherhood revolt in Hama.
His chilling methods included flooding their underground hiding places with fuel

& setting it alight.

The last time I was in
#Afghanistan,
I made reports that included:

A human rights activist
The CEO of a printing company
The CEO of a mineral water company
The founder of a refuge
for wives attacked by their husbands.

All women.

All either exiled, or sabotaged

- by an irrational regime.

I suppose it's inevitable that the Ralph Fiennes theology blockbuster

Pity the children.

They called out "Hello!" to me as I was wandering round Kabul one morning. They wanted to practice their English.

The Brexit vote was more than e i g h t years ago, and to behave as if it has an indefinite mandate would be profoundly self-harming. Stride shouldreflect on Margaret Thatcher's visionary speech in 1988, opening the single market campaign.

As someone said on the World at One, the UK has no more or less red tape than other European countries, and the idea that we have more than...Italy!!... is laughable. There is no need to carry on avoiding the huge benefits of the single market & the customs union - the Brexit vote was 8 years ago.
