Gravity plots working again at www.geos.ed.ac.uk/~hcp/gravity/

Today's trace shows waves from yesterday's quake in Japan, and from a smaller one this morning.

Shows in #Edinburgh, just about. Would probably be clearly visible on the gravity meter, but the processing chain is stuck in a way that I need to get the IT team to fix :-(

Remembrance Sunday: time for my annual sneak down the west attic of @stmaryskirk.bsky.social to check when the war memorial service is over, preceded by some nice half-muffled Grandsire Doubles. (1/2)

This row of cherry trees in the Meadows, #Edinburgh are providing their second week of colour of the year. It is a pity that as I was going past, the light was as flat and dull as it could possibly be without actually being dark.

It's #benchmarkMonday ! This very tidy example is near the University of #Edinburgh King's Buildings.

(It is this one: www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm26548 )

Splendid rainbow this morning as I crossed the Royal Mile ( #Edinburgh ) on my commute. That is the Bank of Scotland on the right, so maybe there really is a pot of gold at that end of the rainbow.

Yesterday's quake in Afghanistan detected in #Edinburgh on the @raspishake.bsky.social . No signal from the gravity meter, sorry, it is stuck.

I am forever losing penknives so it was a nice change to find one (on a beach in Tunisia: bsky.app/profile/hugh... ) It was not usable until I dismantled it and bent the locking spring back to its original shape. I now need to find whether it is less legal to carry than a Swiss Army knife.

Clearing out the greenhouse today. A few last bits of produce coming in . . .

Message on the door of discontent has changed to ask people to return their national @ucu.org.uk strike ballot, now that we are past the date for the @ucuedinburgh.bsky.social local one. (1/2)

Two quakes on the gravity meter trace yesterday at Univ of #Edinburgh GeoSciences. The second one (from Türkiye) shows up on the @raspishake.bsky.social as well; the first one (from the Caribbean) did not. (Current gravity data at www.geos.ed.ac.uk/~hcp/gravity/ )
October 28, 2025 at 8:38 AM
Our @raspishake.bsky.social in #Edinburgh failed to pick this one up; you must have yours in a much quieter environment. The lower-frequency waves showed up nicely on our gravity meter, though. (Ongoing data at www.geos.ed.ac.uk/~hcp/gravity/ )

Middle meadow walk, #Edinburgh, has definitely gone from summer to autumn over the last 5 weeks and is rapidly heading into winter.
October 27, 2025 at 11:48 AM
Winter definitely approaching. Venus bright in the pre-dawn sky as I left the house this morning.
October 22, 2025 at 5:56 AM
A follow up this evening was even louder.
October 20, 2025 at 6:23 PM
In contrast to the quake detected in #Edinburgh 3 days ago, today's quake was not detected by the gravity meter, but was very loud indeed on the @raspishake.bsky.social . This is because it was only M3.3, but was only 111km away.
October 20, 2025 at 9:24 AM
Winter is definitely arriving in #Edinburgh. On 9 October there was a nice sunrise when I arrived at platform 3 in Waverley station. Today it was dark and misty.

The Worcester Pearmain are long over; they go from hard and green to overripe and mushy over too short a time period. Very good flavour for that brief time, though. (4/4)

These are another branch that I grafted onto the Frankenstein tree. I call them "Fish Farm Yellow" because I found the tree across the road from a trout farm and the apples go yellow later in the autumn. They are quite edible when green. These are the first fruits from my grafts. (3/4)

There are still plenty of Laxtons left on the trees. They are a good keeper; I have eaten the last one as late as February. This year it may be later. This branch is actually a scion of my original tree that I grafted onto my Frankenstein tree: blogs.ed.ac.uk/hughpumphrey... (2/4)
October 18, 2025 at 3:54 PM
It has been a mad year for apples. I harvested the Laxton's Superb today; that bowl is only the ones with blemishes. There are several large, carefully packed bags of the clean ones. Blenheim Orange (best tasting) and Russet on the counter in front (1/4)

This. I went to Chengdu (Szechuan, China) (成都四川 中国 ) this year; my hosts took me to a tea (茶) dealer who bamboozled me with many kinds of tea. I came away with some very expensive tea, but the experience was worth it. I am now looking for a good source of Puhang black in #Edinburgh .
October 17, 2025 at 6:49 AM
M6.5 quake in Indonesia detected at University of #Edinburgh today. Detected on the gravity meter but did not show up on the @raspishake.bsky.social . (This is typical for quakes the other side of the Earth: only the lowest-frequency waves arrive here.) #geophysics #seismology

Reminder added to the Door of Discontent that @ucuedinburgh.bsky.social members should get their strike ballots posted.

That is the second half of the "pink fir apple" crop dug up. There are about 7kg: not bad for something that is not so much a crop that I nurture, more a persistent perennial weed that I try to corral.
