This is certainly true in our master's rowing where crews are self selected. No-one wants to be thought of as underpowered and this creates poor situations.

Getting the foot stretcher in the right place goes a long way towards getting the catch together. Hard to do without a view from outside the boat.

Putting emotional distance between yourself and the people your community is asking you to kill is mental self preservation. Not having anyone your community wants dead is vastly superior, but humans 'eh?

You are quite correct, curse short form. I was conflating the two ideas of getting a candidate with established credibility to the base and bringing in a candidate who's avoided the potential pitfalls of being LOTO.
