61 years ago today: Less-well known photos of the Woolworth Jackson sit-in, these two appeared in several MS papers (as well as elsewhere). Both show protester Memphis Norman, a student at Tougaloo, being beaten by Benny Oliver, an ex-Jackson policeman. Both men were arrested.

He never stopped being a war photographer in the sense that there was violence enacted on the communities that the surveys moved through: either by the surveyors, or the way the surveyors framed the land, or the people who were there. Or surveying so that more mining could happen. There were forests cut and put underground to build out the underground spaces for miners. The world was being turned inside out. This violence is what O'Sullivan was photographing- the violence of industrial workers underground who look like casualties in pictures.

DR. JOYCE LADNER: Dorie was very close to Bobby Dylan. He used to come to our apartment. He hung out at the SNCC office during the day, and he would come home with Dorie. We worked long hours, sometimes till 11 o'clock at night, and we were so tired when we got home. All I wanted was for Bobby Dylan to get off the sofa that I had to sleep on and go home, go anywhere. He was serenading. He would write songs on the typewriter at the SNCC office during the day. He gave Dorie one. He wrote three songs that were inspired by her. One - "Outlaw Blues" - the last stanza is very much dedicated to Dorie. He'd be singing, and I'm just sitting there exhausted, wishing this boy would go home. Eventually he'd get up and leave, and Dorie and I would open up the sofa to sleep on.

JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, December 23 - A shot fired into the home of a white couple who have been active in the civil rights struggle here "will only intensify our efforts against segregation," a student at Tougaloo Gollege here said. Joan Trumpauer, a white student at predominately Negro Tougaloo Southern Christian College, reported that Betty Poole and Dorie Ladner, Negro coeds, were sitting in the front room of the campus home of Mr. & Mrs. John R. Salter when someone fired into the bedroom window of the Salter's nine-month-old baby. No one was injured, but Miss Trumpauer said "if Dorie had been in bed, as she would have been an hour later, she certainly would have been shot."

Awakening Ladner: My awakening [to the civil rights movement] came from the death of Emmett Till. He's a young boy who was killed in Mississippi and thrown into the Tallahatchie River. I was around his age and when we saw the photograph of him I said "Oh, my God, oh my God." The Emmett Till murder left a strong impression on me. I said, if they did it to him, they'll do it to me. I over-identified with him to an extent that I just felt that they were going to come get me out of my bed at night. I would cover my head up, thinking that the same thing would happen. J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant were known to be guilty, but found not guilty. I saw the picture of them smiling and laughing after the verdict and I'm saying, "Why aren't they going to jail?" Now I'm believing in — black or white — if you're guilty, you go to jail. But you know that wasn't the case. I was reading the newspaper about the trial every day I could and there was something in it about the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments.

I grew up in a house with a very strong mother whose family was very, very independent. Mother taught us from the age of three on up to not ever bow to anyone, no matter what their color was. She grew up in Wayne County, Mississippi, from the Woullard and Gates family. They were independent people who owned their own land and they were self-sufficient. Mother started training us not to let anybody abuse us, or mistreat us, and to always look white people in the eye when you talk to them. Never look down, never look back. She used to say, "I grew up with them, I fought with them." So I grew up with that and it wasn't a violent kind of lesson, but it was one of independence. And I took that to heart.

I grew up in Palmer's Crossing, Mississippi, which is right off Highway 49, going down to the Gulf Coast, to New Orleans, Louisiana. Palmer's Crossing was a small, segregated town with a school and a church, and everybody knew each other.
