I love the three-wattled bellbird too, bellbirds are so fascinating in general :)

Also the New Zealand bellbird, even though its super unrelated. Very pear-shaped

Agreed.

AI (or rather machine learning) is like the discovery of nuclear technology, it can be used for good, but most often isn't.

OP's argument is like saying we should make more nuclear bombs because nuclear technology can generate clean energy. Its idiotic.

Lol this was my first thought too, but I checked and rats aren't native to Alberta anyways (and also to the rest of America). They must have more rodents the owls can eat, I suppose

(anywyas I see your point I was just lost in my mind thinking about how the line for what's considered a mental illness is drawn and how this ideology could be misused by bad actors oughhhhh i hate ideology and philosophies )

actually I realise the way I worded this is stern, sorry rereadiny this comes off as rude!! oughhhhhh oughh

I don't think the point was to shame ppl who can't get help. "Not ok" meaning "directly harmful to you and the people around you" was my interpretation, rather than it being shameful.

One of my favorite birds I've witnessed, I had a bunch of them last spring visit our feeders :)) I love their chirps. Hope they come again

beautiful colors! maybe it was intentional, but if not, I relate to the struggle of getting charms to not sink. waiting for the resin to thicken before adding them is so hard.... at least it highlights the highest #, except for the d10 where its on the 8

I feel like non-generative AI (useful in science and whatnot as a tool) should be further distinguished from GenAI, cus its an argument used often by AI optimists to justify abysmal dogshit like Sora and datacenters existing.

The technologies might as well be completely seperated in our minds.

I feel like yes and no. The LLM AIs like ChatGPT do more harm than good, tho can be used as a last resort search engine if you're super critical. Image and video GenAI is generally Bad for everything.

But non-gen AI is useful for birding, for example, with Merlin being a great tool to learn calls.

I see, I should have read further in the thread. Thats on me, sorry

A simple google search reveals why, but on social media I would wager most people will just scroll by, and even then the wikipedia page only mentions its use to decribe indigenous people as savages further into the article. I do appreciate the post, though, learned a bit and will try avoiding these.

A lot of people who might be swayed by this post to stop doing the above would just read this, see someone is angry at them, not research further and continue misappropriating culture and whatnot. I get its annoying to explain why you're angry, but I didn't know till today that w*nd*g* was offensive
May 20, 2025 at 6:35 PM
Ok I did some research, and I agree with MOST of the post; all the points made make sense, but the fact they aren't explained might dissuade some people from actually listening. For example, I think it would have been very useful to explain why not use the W word.

So true and real! Related to this, my bsky pet peeve is when people mention things or people I have on my muted words, but find weird and creative ways to mention them, or when people post an image I'd normally have muted words for without alt text.
