He talked about coral reefs, climate change, “Burning Embers” and plausible futures. The situation is critical for corals as climate change accelerates. Conservation actions help but cannot keep up with the rate of change. Plausible futures are distressing.

Other presentations in the session included a photo-id study of the enigmatic Omura’s whale (a beautiful creature) and study of the overlap of marine traffic and cetaceans in the SWIO, which highlighted hotspots where speed restrictions or rerouting could reduce impacts.

The poster sessions had two themes: Fisheries and Ocean Health.

In the afternoon, we were spoiled for choice yet again, with another 8 sessions from Using Storytelling to Advance Marine Conservation and Financing a Sustainable Blue Future at different ends of the spectrum.

With 8 concurrent sessions, one is hard-pressed to choose which talks to attend. They ranged from Biodiversity, Species and Ecosystems Monitoring to Capacity Building, Gender and Inclusion to Innovation, Technology and Emerging Solutions to Governance, Policy and the Blue Economy to name a few.
