It's not a pest because it is from there and co-evolved with the other species in its habitats in Australia. It is introduced into NZ, where historically there were only avian predators, so the birds haven't evolved to deal with mammalian predators.

If only we weren't currently gutting NZ tertiary education and they wanted to come here....
