In my opinion, perspective does not matter. What makes a metroidvania is the mechanics. If you have them, you have a metroidvania on your hands.

It's difficult for me to comprehend why would anyone treat VNs differently. I don't, and I use the same principles when designing my VN as I did when I designed an action RPG. Foundations matter.
