Latest non-fiction, finished yesterday: The Abyss: Nuclear Crisis Cuba 1962, by Max Hastings. 5⭐ I never knew much about this particular piece of history. Holy smokes, the descriptions of Kruschev's behavior makes me think of Trump. 🤮 Rec by @kistreadsbooks.bsky.social

💙📚#BookSky I also finished Silent Running: My Years on a World War II Attack Submarine, by Jim Calvert, a retired USN Admiral. Once again, it's memoir, so, meh. I just didn't care. I mean, it was interesting because I am a Navy vet, and a history fan. But I had to force myself to get through it.

💙📚#BookSky I also recently finished The Second Shot: A Green Beret's Last Mission, by Gene Yu.
I do not like memoir as a genre, but I didn't hate it. Glad to be finished. I don't care about what other people have to say about their own lives. In general. Not always.

💙📚#BookSky I finished The Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs: A New History of a Lost World, by Steve Brusatte. I absolutely loved it. So much information that was all new to me, and just amazing how paleontologists and others have been able to trace this history. Rec by @kistreadsbooks.bsky.social

Just finished the audiobook version of The Sea Wolves: A History of the Vikings, by Lars Brownsworth. I loved it. It was expertly written, and in a style that moved, not a stodgy history tome. I found out about this book from @kistreadsbooks.bsky.social on YouTube.

You could read Bitter Passage, by Colin Mills, as a follow-on to The Terror, however, it does not feature the supernatural aspects that The Terror does. It is about a rescue party sent to find the Franklin Expedition. I read it last year

Knowing how the US military counts on the poverty and socioeconomic status of minorities to suck in recruits, things will look a bit different soon. And that's just disgusting. Never mind those immigrants who join to achieve citizenship.

Last night I finished The Maltese Falcon, by Dashiell Hammett.
My first Hammett book, and I loved how descriptive the style was. Of course, I've seen the film adaptation, so, in my head, Spade, Gutman, and Cairo sounded just like in the movie. 5⭐

💙📚#BookSky Today I finished This Kind of War: The Classic Korean War History, by T. R. Fehrenbach. I learned a lot, but could have done without the offensive accents used by the narrator (I listened to the audiobook). 3⭐

Recently I finished First Lie Wins, by Ashley Elston. It was definitely twisty, which I tend to enjoy.
