The drug war = violence, guns, gangs, money laundering, overdose, addiction, mass incarceration, human rights abuse, serious diseases, stigma, denied medical treatment, consumed vast public money, ruined life opportunities of our young people and put vulnerable communities at risk.

Virtually everyone uses drugs. The so-called 'war on drugs', has conned us all, it's causing so much harm to us all. We need a new drug law that legally regulates ALL drugs - including those drugs being used in the cartoon. We can do better than continue the façade, a phoney rejection of 'drugs'.

We can't build on dodgy foundations - it has to be condemned and demolished. Rescind the Misuse of Drugs Act!
We need to start again on the foundations of evidence, knowledge and expertise. Informed by human rights and harm reduction to develop drug laws that do no harm.

We need our own language, one that enlightens and reveals more accurately the truth about so called 'drugs', 'addiction', risks, prevention and treatment - our current discourse is riddled with Drug War propaganda that colludes & perpetuates the misinformation.

The Drug War:
Peddling & promoting commercially produced drugs, (as if they aren't drugs at all), then prohibiting & punishing the use of all other drugs, (as if they're all inherently more risky)!

The Misuse of Drugs Act has no credibility whatsoever.

The hypocrisy & misinformation
Let's sort it.

NZ has a history for world leading law reform: Woman’s Right to Vote; Decriminalisation of Sex Work; National Needle Exchange, Same Sex Marriage and most recently Drug Checking.

This Symposium will explore why major drug law reform is needed and what it should look like.

Our understanding of drugs are too often unevolved, prejudicial and misinformed.

We struggle to see alcohol, nicotine, sugar and caffeine as drugs while misleadingly regarding all prohibited substances as dangerous. Then we conflate any use of prohibited substance with addiction or problematic use.

We are receiving important reminders about paracetamol that association is not causation. Could someone also tell the NZ Transport Agency that association is not causation. Drugs like cannabis can be detected days, weeks even months after consumption. Drug presence is not the same as drug impairment

Our approach to drugs under prohibition has been informed by propaganda, prejudice and hunch - with devastating consequences:

Prohibition has not reduced the demand for 'drugs', nor the supply. All it's done is make drugs unsafe. Sadly, prohibition has significantly increased the risk of overdose. #IOAD2025

It's time we scrap these damaging ideologically driven drug policies and adopt an evidence based drug policies.

Imagine if alcohol was prohibited.

In the lead up to International Overdose Awareness Day HRCA want to highlight the role of prohibition in increasing the risk of overdose.

Prohibition is a major problem.
