Established in 1957 at the University of Leeds. We are a group of researchers exploring the development and meanings of science, technology and medicine.
A wonderful event! Professor Jon Topham’s @jontopham.bsky.social inaugural professorial lecture, introduced here by Greg Radick, doubling as keynote for the @bshsnews.bsky.social postgraduate conference. An exploration of how history of the book can make us see anew the science-religion relationship

Almost exactly 150 years ago...

On 25 Nov 1874, Professor William Walker, inaugural Professor of Textiles at the newly-established Yorkshire College of Science, delivered an opening lecture. He advocated a "varied and systematic" education, as reported in the Leeds Mercury on 26 Nov 1874.

If you see this post, quote-post a bridge.

The truly magnificent 400m-long Ribblehead Viaduct, around an hour away from us here in Leeds. Started in 1869, it was completed in 1874 - the same year in which the Yorkshire College of Science opened! #histsci #histSTM

Five years before it opened the Yorkshire College of Science was just a gleam in the eye of the Yorkshire Board of Education...

It was developed "to supply ... a complete course of instruction in science applicable to the industrial arts, especially ... engineering, manufactures, and agriculture."
