Back in April, @baseballprospectus.com, I wrote that it didn’t just matter whether Bryson Stott hit LHP, it mattered whether or not Rob Thomson believed in his ability to hit lefties. Stott finished 2025 .225/.287/.288 vs. LHP. And the dynamic cost the Phillies Game 2.
Well, I’ve always believed he can hit lefties,” Thomson said. And it’s true, he’s said this consistently. The tell will be whether he starts playing against, for example, Eduardo Rodriguez, the likely pitcher the Phillies will face on Sunday when the Diamondbacks come to town. I am watching those decisions closely, because there is a clear profile here of a player with untapped talent, an answer for why he struggled, and both the will and a manager looking for him to grab additional playing time. You know who else is watching it closely? Right: Bryson Stott. I asked him how he’d know when he had convinced his manager he should be an everyday player again. “I don’t know,” Stott shrugged. “I guess it changes when it changes.”

MLB does not lack for resources. A forward-thinking organization that treats softball as a “yes, and” product after baseball would be seeding its future fandom in multiple ways, an argument that is economic, not just ethical. A forward-thinking organization would recognize that yes, even girls can tell the difference between baseball and softball, and gaining the allegiance of both groups will pay off down the road. A forward-thinking organization wouldn’t view the WPBL as something to counter-program, but would instead welcome the effort, would have built its own a long time ago, frankly. A forward-thinking organization which had the foresight to start a women’s league out of the hype and success of A League of Their Own would now be presiding over a league older and more established than the very entities MLB says it views as proof it can succeed with AU Softball, such as the WNBA and NWSL.

When Howard asked me to write the foreword for his book, Becoming Caitlin Clark, it was a no-brainer. First of all, Howard is a wonderful sportswriter who has invested in women’s basketball throughout his career and continues to tell the story about our compelling game. He’s covered women’s basketball on every level and is the perfect person to tell this story. Another reason I wanted to contribute was my love for this game and the state that I spent most of my life in.

This is, potentially, four games. This is not even close to a full season, which, again, the WNBA is in a position to weather. The resale ticket market for several Indiana Fever games has tanked, which is, of course, what happens when LeBron James or Leo Messi are forced to miss time due to injuries, and there is no associated chorus worrying that the entire sport will be forced to shut down as a result. The resale ticket market isn’t even revenue which flows to the WNBA or its teams! Caitlin Clark has absolutely supercharged the financial growth of the league, resulting in signing lucrative long-term deals. And believe it or not: with Caitlin Clark out for 14 days? The WNBA doesn’t have to give that money back. It’s true!
