How To Bluesky

I'm a mildly-opinionated guide to using Bluesky
Commandment #2

Thou Shalt Also Snag Thy #TrueName Account!

But be careful of reposting too much - that means when people look at your timeline, they see a bunch of reposts with none of your personality showing

So keep your timeline clean:

Repost something today

Delete or, or, if you have something to say by then, Quote-post it tomorrow

Sounds like a good idea, and I'm sure it's out there, but I haven't heard anything about such a tutorial....

When you run across anything that you think worthwhile - a nifty Account, a particular Post, Starter Pack, Feed, whatever - look for the Share button (circled in red here), which lets you choose from a variety of ways to share, including copying the link directly, sending to a different app, etc

That Visit BookSky button will take you to the link, which looks like this - notice that you can Follow All, with just one click, or select specific ones of interest, each with their own individual Follow button

We will use Booksky as an example - tap on it, and you'll see a screen like this, with a Visit BookSky button

So how do you find Starter Packs that are interesting? Head to this collection of starter packs, which you can search or scroll through

Another great feature that Bluesky has added to what Twitter used to offer is the Starter Pack - kind of like the moderation lists in reverse, Starter Packs are lists of users; you can follow all with one click, or individually Follow users from that list

One odd name keeps coming up wherever I look for recommendations for block lists - Sir Turd of Squirrel!

It's an interesting (if quite opinionated) account; he has another account just for the three types of block lists he keeps current; highly recommended:

Anyone can create a moderation list, so be sure to check out whoever created it, so you can be reasonably sure they're not adding good people to a list of bad people, etc

I suggest choosing the Mute option when you subscribe (free) - that way, if you see a reply in the thread that is muted, but want to understand what they're saying even though they're muted, it's easy to unmute them to read what they say - and block them once it's clear why they're on the list!

A related tool that Bluesky offers is the moderation list - a shareable list of bad accounts that you can choose to Mute or Block
February 26, 2025 at 3:58 AM
This encourages people to be gentle with each other, even when they disagree - doesn't always work, but when it doesn't, Block away!
February 26, 2025 at 3:58 AM
One of the best features Bluesky has added to how Twitter worked is to make blocking bad actors easy and highly effective (when you block an irritating person, they can't interact with you in any way - the virtual equivalent sending them to jail for the crime of being a jerk! :-)

You can tap on the feed name or description to view it - to see the posts it will show you

You can also tap on the plus sign at the right side of the feed to Follow it, which will also pin it to your home / profile

The best feed may be the Science feed - Follow it!

Curated manually by scientists all over the world who are specialists in their fields, ensuring that the accounts in their area of the science feed are valid, credentialed, and/or using other ways of surfacing the best that science has to offer
February 26, 2025 at 3:27 AM
These feeds seem to be sorted by popularity, so scrolling is a great way to get started, finding the ones that lots of people like
February 26, 2025 at 3:20 AM
When you tap on that gray hashtag, it will expand into this selection of Feeds, which you can scroll through, or search if you have a particular term in mind
February 26, 2025 at 3:20 AM
Unfortunately, the need to streamline the UI (user interface) means that the feed button is fairly obscure - it's just a gray hashtag at the upper right
February 26, 2025 at 3:19 AM
On Bluesky, you start with two feeds / algorithms:

Following (which shows you posts from people you Follow)

Discover (which shows you posts based on some algorithm that includes things like accounts the accounts you follow follow, posts that have lots of likes, and who knows what else)
