Whoever paid for these links wants Google's automated anti-spam systems to label the page as 'spam' and remove it from the index.

They are linking to our review with words such as 'hacked accounts for sale' and 'download pirated software here' to tarnish the page as pure spam.

These spammy links come out of the weirdest of places...

From a comment in an abandoned blog belonging to the University of Washington, to the 'about me' section of a user profile in a forum for F1 fans.

Someone bought 300+ spam links and pointed them to one of our most critical air purifier reviews.

The first wave came after we sent a request to the brand for comment about a new product.

The second wave came the day after @linusmediagroup.com posted a video about the brand threatening to sue us.

We spent weeks researching air purifiers we reviewed to determine whether Google Search results and AI Overviews are leading consumers to good advice.

Our analysis shows that AIO will likely recommend buying whatever you show interest in, even if the product doesn’t exist.

We tested a $1,400 air purifier and it performed as well as our 30x20 Corsi-Rosenthal box

1️⃣0️⃣ Stick to brands that have been around for a while

Since 2020, many new brands have appeared promising the world and investing heavily in their marketing.

Sadly, some have already filed for bankruptcy after becoming Amazon bestsellers, while others failed to live up to the hype in our testing.

9️⃣ You might not need smart features

Modern air purifiers come with all sorts of bells and whistles which add up to the price.

Before buying a pricey smart unit with app support and all sort of modes, take some time to decide if you will truly need all those extra features.

8️⃣ Decide if you want an ionizer

Manufacturers in the early 2000s sold ionizer air purifiers that generated ozone and other toxic chemicals.

Modern air purifiers with ionizers are tested and certified by CARB to ensure no ozone is generated so check their database ww2.arb.ca.gov/list-carb-ce...

7️⃣ Think about noise

Noisy air purifiers get turned off, so check noise levels before buying.

Be wary of manufacturer specs because many only state noise levels at the lowest fan speed, which will take FOREVER to clean the air.

6️⃣ HEPA is not a requirement for a good air purifier

HEPA is a rating system for measuring the efficiency of air filters, but it is not the only rating system – it’s just the most popular.

So don’t get caught up in whether a device comes with a HEPA filter. Instead, focus on its CADR score.

5️⃣ Don’t worry too much about activated carbon

Carbon filters reduce particle removal efficiency.

You only need a carbon filter if you have an issue with odors or chemical gasses like formaldehyde.

Particle filters alone can tackle most common issues, such as pollen or dust.

4️⃣ Look for models with a removable pre-filter

Pre-filters extend the life of the main filters as long as you vacuum and clean them regularly, and removable pre-filters make the job easier.

And this is important because a dirty pre-filter can reduce air cleaning efficiency by 40%!

3️⃣ Don’t trust room size recommendations

Shopping online you might think that even small air purifiers are suitable for 1000 ft² rooms.

That is because most brands share room sizes based on just 1 air change per hour.

But this isn’t good enough: the CDC recommends at least 5 air changes per hour.

2️⃣ Bigger is generally better

CADR tests are run on the device working at full speed, but most air purifiers are loud at full power (55 - 65 dBA).

That is why, you are better off getting the biggest device you can live with so you can use it at lower fan speeds instead.

1️⃣  Clean air delivery rate

The main thing you need to look for when choosing an air purifier is its CADR score.

The higher the CADR score, the better.

Before buying an air purifier, search for the model on ENERGYSTAR’s directory of CADR test results: www.energystar.gov/productfinde...

In a world where AI answers blindly regurgitate sponsored product reviews and manufacturer’s marketing materials, it’s important to know what to look for and what to ignore.

Here are our 10 tips for choosing an air purifier you won’t regret buying 🧵
