"The eventual American woman will be even more beautiful than the woman of to-day. Her claims to that distinction will result from a fine combination of the best points of all those many races which have helped to make our population." -- Charles Dana Gibson, 1910

Roy Boreen's watch, worn on this day in 1941 on the USS Oklahoma and now in the @wwiimuseum.bsky.social, inspired my @runningpressbooks.bsky.social book "Worn On This Day: The Clothes That Made History." It's stopped at 8:04 am, when he dove overboard as the ship exploded. He died in 2022, age 102.

#WinterWeddingAdventCalendar Day 7: Molly Hullis wore what a Melbourne newspaper described as a "white fur Eskimo bonnet" with a micro mini at her December 1968 wedding to Aussie pop star Robin Gibb of the BeeGees in London. He had rescued her from the 1967 Hither Green rail crash, in which 49 died.

#WinterWeddingAdventCalendar Day 6: Instead of bouquets, Helena Nitch's bridesmaids carried cozy "gauged satin muffs trimmed with fur on which rested posies of snowdrops," per The Telegraph, at her February 1932 wedding to Toby Barrett in London. Their gold satin gowns were edged with kolinsky fur.

#WinterWeddingAdventCalendar Day 5: Winter weddings hit different when you own a private island in the Carribean. That's where British businessman Richard Branson married Joan Templeman (with their equally dapper children Holly and Sam) in front of an intimate audience of 35 guests in December 1989.

#WinterWeddingAdventCalendar Day 3: Alpine vistas? Check! Fur-clad bridesmaids? Check! Horse-drawn carriage? Check! Royal usher? Check! Polo player Mark Tomlinson and Olympic dressage gold medalist Laura Bechtolsheimer's March 2013 wedding in Arosa, Switzerland, had EVERYTHING.

#WinterWeddingAdventCalendar Day 2: After she slipped stepping off a bus and broke the same leg she'd broken skiing in Aspen earlier that year, Women's Wear Daily correspondent Andrea Shuman decided to cover her cast with salwar kameez at her December 1968 wedding to Franklin Stroud in New York, NY.

It's the most wonderful time of the year--time for my #WinterWeddingAdventCalendar! As I learned while writing my @Running_Press book “The Way We Wed: A Global History of Wedding Fashion,” I *love* a winter wedding. A BOOK! Preferably something footnote-lite that pairs well with too much eggnog. Here are some easy-reading recommendations for the fashion-history-curious who don’t know where to start. Happy shopping!

CRAFTY GOODIES! Gorgeous Liberty of London fabric-covered embroidery hoops, Tatty Devine’s sewing machine necklace, Tofts crochet kits, and old-school fashion plate makers are favorites with my friends who sew (which is most of my friends).

LOCAL EATS! Similarly, if you’re visiting (or hosting) out-of-towners, introduce them to a local delicacy, whether that’s fresh New York bagels, small-batch maple syrup, or a hard-to-find craft beer. If you invite me to your house, I’m bringing one of these neighborhood favorites:

AMERICAN-MADE ICONS! You don’t have to vote red to care about supporting US manufacturers--and avoid paying Scrooge McTrump’s tariffs. Give a Pendleton blanket, a Shinola watch, a Heath Ceramics vase, or Kei & Molly dish towels--or make someone’s whole year with a National Parks Service annual pass.

HOLIDAY HOMEWARES! Home décor is pretty personal, so unless I know someone VERY well, I stick to seasonal stuff they can use immediately and store the rest of the year, like cocktail napkins, the Met’s annual haul of shoe ornaments, a kitschy kitty cookie jar, or a beautiful melting-ice menorah.

FANCY TOYS! This $200 Lego set is the second most beloved present I ever gave my husband, but kids enjoy them too, I hear. Personally, I’d rather get a collectible Barbie or an EasyBake oven.

FANCY HEADPHONES! The most beloved gift I ever gave my husband, along with a Costco-sized bottle of his favorite bourbon to enjoy with his tunes.

SHOES! They’re my go-to baby shower gift (everyone gets TONS of clothes) but I also love to give fun shoes at the holidays: custom Vans, cozy Uggs, rain boots in their favorite color, or cute Converse Mary Janes. If you’re worried about fit, choose a brand they already wear--and get a gift receipt.

LUXURY TRINKETS! Think the cheapest thing at Le Creuset, an ICE whistle from Tiffany, an Alexander McQueen scarf, or that Hermes eyelash curler I’ve been, er, eyeing. They make perfect stocking stuffers and the packaging is just as dreamy as it is for the $$$$ stuff.
