The main thing about Sullivan was that he had this huge outsized influence, partly because there were only three channels. As important as the late night shows seem to be these days, there's no Sullivan these days and there probably never will be again. /4

He also had this ridiculously bad puppet called Topo Gigio, the Italian Mouse, who I despised with the despise of a thousand suns; and since I was young at the time it was offered as a reward to stay up and see him. It was the "stay up" part that was relevant.

It seems pretty quaint to see him on video these days. It was observed that he had little personality; but he was sort of a cultural gatekeeper. If you were a performer - a comedian, a singer, whatever - it was the golden ticket. Sullivan was also completely comfortable with Black performers /2
