Fantastic Film 19:
Fuck My Son!
U.S. Premiere

I knew what I was getting into but I never expected a film like this to be so outrageously bland and unfunny. The gross out gore is certainly repulsive and the practical effects are pretty solid but otherwise it just feels edgy for the sake of edgy.

Fantastic Film 18:
Vicious
World Premiere

A pedestrian supernatural horror film that wades around typical tropes without bringing much new to the table. Lacking clear direction for its protagonist and arbitrarily adding/removing/changing rules make it hard to root for. Fanning is good though.

Fantastic Film 17:
Silent Night, Deadly Night
World Premiere/Secret Screening

A fun slasher that will piss off all the right people with who Billy targets, this remake builds plenty of goodwill with fun characters, gory kills, & good laughs. It’s not revolutionary but it’s delightful all the same.

Fantastic Film 16:
Dawning
World Premiere

A dull, plodding trek through the woods, this arthouse horror attempts to deconstruct the slasher. Its treatise on the banality of death is interesting enough if the pacing wasn’t as punishing. Every time I thought it ended it came back w/ more [derogatory]

Fantastic Film 15:
The Restoration at Grayson Manor
World Premiere

Mixing camp, queerness, and melodrama, this indie horror has so many cool things going on. Colorful characters, vicious dialogue, and a gleeful penchant for violence make this so fun. Chris Colfer & Alice Krige are gloriously evil.

Fantastic Film 14:
Crazy Old Lady
World Premiere

Crazy Old Lady is hagsploitation without the exploitative elements. Captivating dialogue subverts the static nature of its largely single location story. Carmen Maura is so damn good in this. She manages to evoke fear and sympathy effortlessly!

Fantastic Film 13:
The Holy Boy
International Premiere

A deeply emotional and unsettling examination of faith, suffering, and queerness in a small town using bold imagery. The Holy Boy poses fascinating questions and crafts compelling characters against a slow boil into madness. Loved it obviously.

Fantastic Film 12:
Don’t Leave the Kids Alone
U.S. Premiere

Great depiction of bickering brothers making the most annoying decisions [complimentary]. I had a lot of fun with this one. Tense, claustrophobic, and harrowing, this is such a fun, shocking movie. Loved the two competing stories.

Fantastic Film 11:
Black Phone 2
World Premiere

Creative, scary, and emotional as hell, Black Phone 2 is a worthy follow up to the supernatural slasher. Great performances, captivating storytelling, and emotionally resonant themes make this sequel hard to discount. I cried three times & during Q&A.

Fantastic Film 10:
Haunted Heist
World Premiere

The first act is GREAT. Very funny with playful character dynamics. Once the ghosts are introduced, however, the action gradually slows and the film meanders quite a bit. The cast is great and the production values are there though!

Fantastic Film 9:
Beast of War
North American Premiere

Mark Coles Smith the man that you ARE! More films with him leading please. A confident shark war horror film, Beast of War easily makes the top list for best shark films of the new millennium. Fun, intense, & just a lil sexy, it’s a grand time.

Fantastic Film 8:
A Useful Ghost
U.S. Premiere

A brilliant examination on how capitalism crushes your dreams and uses those with good intentions, this whimsical Thai supernatural comedy is gloriously queer and fun while still tackling important issues. Need to spend 10+ movies in this universe pls

Fantastic Film 7:
V/H/S/Halloween
World Premiere

Seeing these films every year is the best tradition at the fest. It’s not my favorite V/H/S film but it’s absolutely solid. Lots of fun and creativity in these shorts. The scariest segment is “Home Haunt” while the most creative is “Fun Size.”

Fantastic Film 6:
Night Patrol
World Premiere

Intense, timely, and so well made, Night Patrol is a damn good time. Deeply upsetting yet action packed, there’s a lot to the story’s mythology that feels both powerful and unique to the sub-genre this one occupies. Great performances and effects here!

Fantastic Film 5:
A Woman Called Mother
World Premiere

A slow burn, this is Indonesian horror is an intense, emotional ride. Production elements that punch above its weight, great scares, and fantastic performances, specifically from the actress who plays the mother, make this a must watch.

Fantastic Film 4:
The Cramps: A Period Piece
World Premiere

A delightful period film [double entendre] that deeply understands its vision and influences. Fantastic design elements, snappy dialogue, great fashion, and an important story make this debut feature endearing and exciting all the same.

Fantastic Film 3:
The Curse
World Premiere

A familiar film steeped in East Asian horror conventions, The Curse is a mixed bag of scares & laughs. The idea is interesting enough before getting marred by the film’s inability to stick its landing. Loved the villain but hated how everyone lacks agency.

Fantastic Film 2:
Crushed
North American Premiere

What a downer. A meandering and muddled narrative obscures the various important themes of sex trafficking, animal abuse, apostasy, and the exploitation of the Global South. It may not tie these together well but it is very upsetting to its credit.

Fantastic Film 1:
Primate
World Premiere

Primate is a gloriously fun killer chimpanzee movie that gets down to the good stuff rather quickly. Gnarly kills, fun set pieces, and excellent practical effects make this creature feature one to look out for. A great way to start the fest for sure.

SXSW Film 15:
Touch Me
Texas Premiere

A truly bonkers midnight movie with bizarre characters, a mesmerizing aesthetic, and great comedy, Touch Me is bound to be divisive. It manages to expound on a variety of heavy topics without losing its comedic edge or interesting story. Plus tentacle sex!

SXSW Film 14:
The Astronaut
World Premiere

Toying with elements of psychological/body horror, The Astronaut takes a sharp turn into absurdity with a third act twist that makes or breaks the film for viewers. Forgettable characters & passable performances make the unevenness even more noticeable.
