fuck it, some thoughts on both games from a while ago
very far into psychonauts 2 now and man with this being my second only full playthrough i'm understanding why i don't come back to this one as much as the first game the gameplay is so often rigid and stiff in some places and it does get under my skin a little bit the wall jumping especially has this problem, it doesn't feel right to me and i don't think it ever will this might be heresy to say too but, some of the later levels just don't interest me much on the gameplay side of things, especially (and i know this'll get me shit but) bob's bottles it's a gorgeous level from the narrative's side, but the gameplay is really lacking for me and it's really weirdly jank too the door boat, the mario galaxy style disappearing floor, having to hold the bob bulbs? all of it feels just off enough to feel awkward none of it's bad, it's tolerable, but it continues to remind me why i liked the first game's gameplay so much it was also jank as hell, i'll never deny that, but it was the kind of jank that allowed more freedom weird level collision that meant you could skip parts of levels if you were good enough, a movement system that's slightly unwieldy but so SO fun to get good with and a strong sense of momentum that added to both of those aspects levitation is the big thing that i hate that they changed, it's so lame that it has a top speed and it does NOT let you get up as high as it used to i also enjoyed the level design more in the first game, partially because it's "poorly" designed with the first game you could really tell that it was a dev teams first foray into making a 3d platformer, and for better and for worse it means a lot of parts of psychonauts' level design is often... unusual but combined with this stuff leads to levels that are weird and strange and only really make sense with the gameplay they're combined with where for psychonauts 2's levels, it feels more standard nothing wrong with that, i still think psychonauts 2 is a fantastic game so clearly it's not a dealbreaker, but a big part of the draw of the original game to me is that it's so non-traditional to other 3d platformers of then and even still now is psychonauts 2's gameplay better? i mean it's subjective, but you could probably make a strong argument for that being the case and i might even agree with you but psychonauts 1's gameplay is more interesting to me, and also just more fun some extra little notes while they're on my mind; i hate the weird ghosting effect that happens on moving objects sometimes? it's like there's rtx enabled but psychonauts 2 doesn't have rtx support so i don't know what's happening there. psychonauts 2 has a lot of nice quality of life improvements, most notably 100% being WAY easier to get and there being no true point of no return like the first game. norma is still incredibly unlikable and i'm 90% she will remain that way (she puts bobby to fucking shame my GOD she's so obnoxious). spoiler tagged something for the first game just in case anyone here wants to play that one still that's all i got for now, i'll probably have a lot more thoughts by the time i'm finished with the main story and then even more after having 100%ed the game again

i still love 2 but 1 just has something that 2 is missing (on top of a couple of gameplay changes between games i don't really agree with) that i have trouble putting my finger on
