A simple joy: enjoying a cup of coffee in quiet solitude at my kitchen table on an early morning in Portland. My family is asleep. The air this morning is foggy and freezing. The fog has frozen leaving the entire neighborhood covered in a sheen of sparkling ice. There is much beauty in this.

Germany has issued a red flag for the United States. Other countries are telling their citizens it isn’t safe to travel here. There have been worldwide anti-Trump protests. This is real. It’s happening. Do you meet the moment? Or do you plant your head in the sand?

The Hero is a convenient myth. He’s not coming. We’re it. All of us. The divergent, the outcast, the queer, the transgender, the nonbinary, the weird and wonderful in all our anxious, depressed, disabled, beaten and broken glory. Stay here, stay who you are. Witness.

It’s not too late to start reading and learning. Philosophy builds on itself. No one of us can do all the thinking even if we did nothing else. But to evaluate another’s ideas takes far less effort. Do it effectively and you benefit and absorb months or years of thinking in the space of a page.
