It hasn't always been this way. Viktor knows this, acutely. Has internalized it, sat with it, fused it into his centeal nervous system. And yet all the foreknowledge in the world cannot dislodge the sudden downwards pull of his body, like the matter within him has remembered the importance of gravity and wishes to rejoin with the earth. It does not replace the unspeakable, does not abate the vice grip tightened around his ribs. Jayce lies in a hospital bed. Viktor wishes he would just sit up, give him a boyish grin and tease him. 'Gotcha, Vik.' Instead, the only sounds in the room are the rhythmic polymeter of monitors cataloguing that his partner is, for the moment, still alive. Viktor's skin crawls. He can't sit still. The presence of an item he's carried with him practically burns in its holding place close to his chest. He looks up at the clock, mocking him with the slowest progression of the second hand, then back down to Jayce. There is no better time, he realizes. Without intervention, Viktor would be left to wait out the universe's-- no, the arcane's-- coin flip of a whim on whether to subject him to this in perpetuity or to throw him into yet another iteration of their existence. No. The chair scrapes loudly on the ground as Viktor shoves himself upwards, using the table briefly for balance until he reaches the door of the small room. Deftly, Viktor turns over the lock with a quiet click. Decided, he makes his way back around between the rolling bedside table and the IV cart to Jayce's side, hovering on the precipice of his own words. His hand quakes briefly as he brushes a misplaced lock of hair back, fingers skirting lightly down behind Jayce's ear, his thumb brushing a sun kissed cheek. "This is not the end, Jayce. Not for you." For him, that's likely another story. Quieter, still, "Don't let go."
