We have since had conversations about what she saw and how much she ached to see me so alone, but that was years/decades after the fact. That’s a long time to think you’re by yourself. Don’t wait to tell her. You can’t necessarily improve the situation, but you can be there for her.

although never my teacher - I felt like I truly had no one in my corner. If she had told me that she saw my pain and she didn’t think it was acceptable that people should treat anyone that way - in middle school or elsewhere - I think I would’ve been better able to endure the social isolation.

off approach - not out of cruelty, but I think because she thought I was just going through a normal rite of passage and interference on her part might only make things worse. And while actual interference on her part almost certainly would’ve made things worse - she was a teacher at my school,

Not sure I have much more to contribute, but as another middle school outcast (and perpetual outsider) I would have appreciated my mother telling me she was there for me. She didn’t have the same experiences I did and I’m not sure she understood what I was going through, but she chose a more hands-

Reminded me of a French photographer whose name I forgot. Searching for it, I learned about Raoul and Marthe Minot. They dared to surreptitiously document the Nazi occupation of Paris with their Kodak. Raoul paid with his life. I wouldn’t have learned about them without your photograph. Merci!
