Bird flu also hits backyard birds. Chickens need lots of care. Feed, fresh water, protection from other animals. Often, the cost does not benefit the owner. (But fresh eggs are wonderful.)

Departments are losing staff in large numbers, creating further instability. Every day, we face the uncertainty of whether it will be our last on the job. Many of us have families to support, and the stress extends to them as well.
