Many people use criticism to slow the flow of positive energy. When they are beginning to feel good, they think: "Why did I do that? Shouldn't I have ...? If only I weren't so ... I wish I were like ..." In relationships, they may use similar critical behavior to limit the positive energy that is being exchanged. In our therapy practice we saw a classic example of using criticism to stop good feeling. Wife, after a problem was resolved, moved toward Husband to embrace him. They had hugged for about three seconds when he sniffed and said, "Your hair smells funny." Pop! went the balloon. Soon they were embroiled in another hassle. When it was brought to his attention what he had done, he roundly denied that his Upper Limits button had been pushed. "Nope," Page 130 of 291 47% he said, "I just thought it was my duty to let her know that her hair smelled funny." But his wife thought: "That's what you always do. I get close to you and you pick that time to tell me something that's wrong with me!" We had them try again. They embraced, and we asked them not to say anything but just to feel whatever they felt inside themselves. Ten seconds into the embrace he burst into tears. He cried for a little while, then he said that if he let himself be close to people he was afraid he would be hurt. More than a few seconds of closeness triggered sadness in him, so he found a way to push his wife away. It was easier for him to deal with her anger than to confront his own sadness.
