this is a tough one because I wonder whether there is a threat that they couldn’t almost immediately dismantle through some alternative path. a framing like “do ______ or else I’ll ______” seems like it would be hard to fill in the blanks with something where you also survive and enjoy the results

what was new to me was the experience of realizing that she needs them in a fundamental way that isn’t illustrated in earlier episodes. the fact that they will mobilize her to please her wasn’t new, I agree, but I think the meaning of that mobilization is different here

the store bit isn’t a gag, it’s Carol wishing to be left alone and hoping she’d be able to just hop on over to sprouts on her own time, but she can’t and won’t be able to do that. It’s Carol learning that she is fully dependent on the collective for her own basic survival

also not clear to me at this point that there isn’t *any* kind of autonomy among them, what to make of (apparently consensual) one-on-one sex with Mr Diabatè, an act which isn’t obviously in service of the mission to clean up the destruction they wrought

it could be read as american exceptionalism, I suppose, but it could also be read (as I was reading it) as obnoxious american hyper-individualism
I also wasn’t reading the other pov’s as not getting it so much as relieved to still have their families with them, and unwilling (yet) to see evil there

the point of that sequence is to get you to notice that that woman, in her normal pre-virus life, was absolutely not a pilot, yet she knows how to operate that complicated cargo plane and get it to take off without destroying it on a runway cut in half by debris from crashes caused by the virus
