A gov't's power comes from its legitimacy among the population - in a democracy. Or from its ability to indistriminately use violence, in an authoritarian system.

The gov't knew that once everyday people have nothing to lose anymore and will sacrifice everything...

Until enough people are willing to upset their normal life to fight for their democracy and freedoms, they'll keep losing it bit by bit, every day.

Yes, this is a subtweet of the current US. Many people performatively criticize their government, but where are the thousands of people in the streets willing to be beaten/die to change things?
They aren't there. Trump knows it. That's why he's doing what he wants, and GOP enables him w/out fear.

If there's any lesson from the past 8 years, it's that there are no good billionaires.
They can't be the solution, since they're much of the problem.
Tax them, constrain them with laws, make them hate being billionaires.
That's how we start to turn things around.

Instead, I'll be building tools that allow us to bring real democracy on a longer timescale. That means supporting open platforms, open web.

There will be ads on some atproto AppViews, but unclear whether they'll ever be on Bluesky specifically.
I believe it'd only work if the app client gets a cut, motivating them to show the ads.
But it'll always be possible to build ad-free clients for free.
