As a mother, Alice has made many sacrifices. Her social life, her independence, her alone time. People called her crazy for trying so hard. The child was a lost cause. They would have no future. But Alice refused to give up. How could she? Aubrey would forever and always be her child. If there were one thing she would do differently, she would never have let Aubrey remain in Katherine’s care for so long. “There is no time left!” Sebastian calls from where he is climbing into the submarine. A half-conscious Seong-yu is cradled in his arms, having gotten injured in their escape here. Angel was also wounded, a hand pressed against their side trying to slow down the bleeding. The two would survive- if they made it out in time. The longer they lingered, the more blood was lost. “Alice, get in here!” “There is no room left,” Alice said once she realized. The submarine they had originally picked out was completely out of fuel, so they had to pick a smaller one. But that unfortunately meant she could not fit inside. Not with everyone else. Angel had gone ahead to get the submarine started which meant it could not see the gaze Alice and Sebastian shared. He inhaled sharply. “Alice, no.” “Protect them for me.” She smiled weakly. Sebastian’s jaw tensed as she reached out to brush some hair from his face. Her fingers trailed down to wipe away a couple of tears that escaped him. (“You didn’t have to buy this for me.” Sebastian breathed in wonder, staring down at the guitar in his hands. The guitar he had been dreaming of owning for months now. Alice caught him once outside the store staring at it. And now here it was. “Seriously- I can pay you back-” “Nonsense. It’s your birthday!” Alice insisted with a smile, having finished preparing the birthday cake. She was intending to save the present for when his family arrived, but she just couldn’t help herself. After removing her oven mitts, she turned and pulled Sebastian into a tight hug. “Happy birthday, Sebastian.”) She then stroked Seong-yu’s head gently, his eyes fluttering weakly from the touch. His eyes were glazed over from the overwhelming pain he was in. The poor thing probably wasn’t even entirely lucid anymore. “And you…make sure not to cause trouble for these two.” (“This is Seong-yu. You two will be babysitting him after school starting today.” Alice explained, her hand on the boy’s shoulder. She watched Aubrey roll their eyes and Sebastian pout from where the two were seated on the couch. “So don’t be mean to him, alright? Now, how about I make you all some snacks while you get the third controller for Seong-yu to join you?”) And finally Angel. Oh, her dearest Angel. It couldn’t know her plan. If they did, they would immediately stop her. Or worse. So Alice backed away, letting the submarine doors close in front of her. By the time Angel realized what was happening, it would be too late. It was better this way. It was better. So why was she crying? (The infant in Katherine’s arms was so tiny. Its little chubby face was red as it wailed and wailed. Gently- oh so gently- Alice reached out to gently trace her fingertips along the child’s cheek. So soft. So delicate. She was scared that any force and the poor thing would break. Then the baby reached up and grasped onto her finger. It was so tiny their entire hand could barely hold on. Then they open their eyes and stare up at Alice. And then they laugh. A beautiful, sweet sound that had Alice’s heart swelling and catching in her throat. “Hello, little angel.” She cooed softly, gently stroking that little cherubic cheek. “Welcome to the world…”) Alice pressed her hands against the cold metal and began to push. Without her assistance, there was a chance the submarine’s engines would not start in time. It was too weighed down by the passengers. She had to do this. For her children. She couldn’t fail them again. (It had been a long day. Work was exhausting, the customers rude, and her coworkers uncaring of her circumstances. She had to stay longer than usual despite pleading with her boss that she had a child at home. Her boss only scoffed in her face. She sighed tiredly and pushed open the front door. The last thing she expected, however, was to find Aubrey fast asleep on the couch. She thought they would be in its room by now. But here they were, wrapped up in a blanket as the TV played at a low volume. Were they…waiting for her? Gently, Alice scooped up the teenager, trying to be careful not to wake it. Luckily, Aubrey barely stirred, only shifting to cling to Alice.) There was banging from inside. Muffled shouting. “Alice..!” She could barely hear the cries as the bombs began to set off. The flames licked at her back, the air filling with the smell of burning flesh and gunpowder. But she continued to push. “Mom!” “I’m sorry…” (“This is Sebastian.” Aubrey grumbled, avoiding looking at Alice, whereas the boy beside them was smiling and waving eagerly. “I got a stupid science project with him.” “It’s nice to meet you, ma’am.” Sebastian greeted politely catching Alice off guard. But she smiled. “It’s nice to meet you too, Sebastian. Why don’t you two head up to Aubrey’s room and I’ll get started on some snacks for you two!”) Angel continued to scream as they slammed against the window, barely able to see Alice as the submarine entered the water. Behind them, Sebastian was silent. But it knew he was crying. It was how they knew something was wrong. Seeing him crying and Alice nowhere inside. If they weren’t worried about drowning them all and dying they would have shot at the window. Anything so it could drag Alice inside here and shout at her for being so fucking selfless. They should have known something was wrong. They should have done something! And now- Now- (“Hello, Aubrey…” The woman greeted gently, crouched down trying to meet the child’s gaze. She was smiling softly, eyes crinkling upwards slightly. “My name is Alice. I’m going to be your new guardian starting today. Would you like to see your new home?”) Now she was gone. Again. Angel’s knees gave out as they screamed. The last thing they saw was Alice’s body floating in the water as the submarine left her behind.
